Despite the rain, locals and visitors still had Bavarian-style fun at the 45th Mt. Angel Oktoberfest.
In keeping with motherland tradition, the German settlers of Mount Angel have held harvest festivals since the late 1800s. So when the first official Mount Angel Oktoberfest hit the streets 45 years ago, it had all the necessary components: a biergarten and a dozen food booths. And, as a farmer sharpens his plow, Mount Angel has been honing its Oktoberfest ever since.
The Mount Angel, Oktoberfest Board of Directors will award $105,250 to 48 non-profit organizations May 17 as a result of 2009 Oktoberfest. The largest grant of $50,000 will be used to help build a new Community Center for Mount Angel.
The 2010 Northwest Festivals Conference Ovation Award Ceremony recognized Mount Angel’s Wurstfest 2009 as Best New Festival or Event in Oregon, Oktoberfest was honored as the Best Cultural and Heritage Event for 2009 and Oktoberfest Public Relations Director Jerry Lauzon is the Oregon Festival and Event Industry’s Volunteer of the Year for 2009.
John Gooley, Oktoberfest president announced the distribution of $105,250 to be shared by 48 non-profit organizations in Mt. Angel and surrounding communities as a result of this year’s successful Oktoberfest.
The Mount Angel Oktoberfest took place September 17, 18, 19, and 20 of 2009.
While attending Gallatin County High School in Bozeman, Mont., I participated in the annual Elk’s Minstrel shows. The cast and workers for the show were the town’s business and professional men.
The Mt. Angel Oktoberfest, like its older and larger namesake in Munich, is all about celebrating the fruits of the harvest, as well as the wonderful Bavarian heritage we claim as ours.
Philis Schmidt has made die Früchtsäule for Oktoberfest every year since 2002, but, although she uses a variety of beans and lentils, herbs and spices; she’s not cooking up a dish to be sold in one of the many food vendor chalets.
Mt. Angel Oktoberfest President John Gooley has received letters in support of constructing a new Oktoberfest Community Building from the Mt. Angel Fire District, St. Mary Catholic Church, Mt. Angel School District, Wilco, Mt. Angel Development Programs and the Mt. Angel Chamber of Commerce.
Mt. Angel’s Oktoberfest took six honors in The Statesman Journal’s 2009 search for the Best of the Mid-Valley contest. The Mt. Angel Oktoberfest Board of Directors voted unanimously at its Feb. 19 meeting to pursue grants on its own to build a new Biergarten/Community Building.
Mt. Angel is throwing another party and this time it is to celebrate the end of winter, the beginning of Lent and the gastronomic wonders of German sausage (wurst). The event, cosponsored by Oktoberfest and Mt. Angel Chamber of Commerce, is set to take place in the Oktoberfest Building in Mt. Angel on Saturday and Sunday, Feb. 21 and 22. It will be a place for families to come, eat, drink and be merry in all matters Bavarian.
David Kohler, director of food booth operations for Mt. Angel Oktoberfest, reported record sales for the 50 participating food booths. Sales for 2008 were $661,157 compared to $638,209 in 2007. As both a mother of four and an educator, Audrey Nieswandt of Silverton knows traditions are important to families.
Even when the thought of one more Chicken Dance at Mt. Angel’s Oktoberfest can step on her last nerve, she knows that with the last name of Nieswandt, and with her children Lauzons, the festival is in the family’s blood.
