Silverton High School Athletic Director Greg Kaatz doesn’t want to train football, soccer, basketball, volleyball or baseball players.
Izaak Tobin is not your average incoming sophomore in high school. Six days of the week, he drives an hour and a half to practice in Hillsboro and on days off, he runs. His work ethic is taking him places.
The Silverton High Schools boys and girls track and field teams both won the Mid-Willamette Conference district and dual championships.
Runners who are suffering from a case of the blahs caused by too much running on the road or track might find Saturday’s Silver Falls Challenge an intriguing change of scenery.
Struggling with early season losses and feeling as if they lacked cohesiveness, the Silverton High School softball team didn’t begin the season in its groove.
The Silverton boys basketball team participated in the 5A State Championship in Eugene.
The Silverton boys basketball team defeated Sherwood 55-47 March 6 at home. The Foxes next head to Eugene to face Pendleton 1:30 p.m. March 11 at the University of Oregon’s Mac Court.
As of press time on Feb. 24, the boys’ basketball team was ranked fourth in state in the 5A Coaches Boys Basketball Poll and was in first place in the Mid-Willamette standings. The team’s league record is 12-1 and 21-2 overall. It will compete in the state playoffs, with first and second round games scheduled the first week of March and the state tournament March 11-13.
When Silverton community members gather in The Oregon Garden pavilion on Saturday, March 13, they will not only celebrate Silverton High School Athletic Department’s rich past, they will help to pave the way for its future.

Mt. Angel’s Kennedy Trojans finished the 2009 season as second in the state for 2A football, but their dream season was not over. They made another dream come true. Five members of the team accompanied by coach and Spanish teacher David Stavros and his wife, Gina, went to Lima, Peru over Christmas break to dedicate a home for a family that was built with money the team raised earlier this year.
Steaming teenagers emerge dripping wet from the chlorinated depths and rush over to a pile of terry cloth, quickly robing themselves to defend against the 26 degree temperature. Despite the similarities to a scene from sci-fi film, it is a familiar scenario for Silverton High School swim team members and coaches.
The music cues, the spotlight shines, and the Silverton High School Dance team takes the floor. With focus and style they execute a carefully choreographed routine.
The 2009 schedule posters displayed in many Mt. Angel businesses labeled the Kennedy High School football team as “Bigger, Stronger, Faster.” The team certainly lived up to that standard.
Silverton High School sophomore Morgan Anderson took 24th place at the OSAA 5A State Cross Country Meet with a time of 20 minutes and 25 seconds, earning her an All-State Honorable Mention.
The OSAA recently announced winners of the Dairy Farmers of Oregon Academic All State honors for fall sports. Kennedy High School Boys Cross Country team came in first place in the 1A/2A/3A division with a team GPA of 3.74.
The Kennedy Cross Country teams concluded a successful season at the OSAA State Meet on Nov. 7. The Kennedy boys finished in 11th place and the girls took 9th.
The Silverton High School volleyball program benefits this fall from two first-year coaches, both recent SHS grads. Justine Mosher (SHS ’08) coaches the freshmen team; Staci Fisher (SHS ’04) guides the junior varsity team. Both Mosher and Fisher assist Head Coach Kirsten Barnes with the varsity team, which was ranked fourth in the state at the season’s midpoint.
At the Silver Falls Invitational cross-country meet hosted by Stayton High School on Oct. 1, John F. Kennedy High School’s Bridget Donohue won the Varsity Girls’ race in 20:57, narrowly edging Blanchet’s Emily Hillmer in the last 100 meters of the race. Kennedy High School head football coach Randy Traeger has begun his 30th year in the interscholastic sports arena. Traeger said he equally enjoys both the “what” and “why” of coaching and is motivated by the building of character in his players.
Rebecca Merrell, Lindsey Kariker, Hannah Roth and Jason Pallister stand on the sidelines, watching the Silverton High School football team fight for a win. Roth fetches water for the exhausted players, Merrell keeps track of the offensive stats, while Pallister records defense and Kariker wraps ankles and helps with anything medical.
In the spring of 2003, Fred George formed a team of 8-year-old girls called ‘The Emeralds’ for the Silver Falls Soccer Club.
Silverton High School senior Hannah Deede began to be recruited for volleyball by Gonzaga University during her junior year.
The rules have been changed for students participating on athletic teams at Silverton High School. “These are different times for kids. Times have changed, and there are so many more challenges, distractions and things for kids to do, right or wrong, so basically, our athletic department policies have to keep up with the times in representing the kids’ best interest,” said Greg Kaatz, assistant vice principal and athletic director for Silverton High School.
