The Old Curmudgeon: Wow! what a ride – Scootin’ on my scooter

By Vern Holmquist

Rejoice! Our new city administrator Susan Muir has arrived, settled in, is getting acquainted and has obviously been well-received by the staff she will be working with.

Susan is eager to get to work for Mount Angel. She is a very easy person to talk with and she hopes more of our residents will drop by her office to say hello and welcome her. Susan is charming, knowledgeable, a good choice by our council and looks like a keeper to me.

So far at this writing, Susan has been entertained by the Lions Club at their meeting and everyone found her charming at the Senior Center luncheon.

She has been given a tour of our safety facilities, the city wells and other logistics. She likes what she sees and is excited about participating in our Oktoberfest celebration.

If you see Susan riding around on her silver Vespa, give her a wave. And if you see a silver Yamaha trying to catch up, it will probably be me. Welcome Susan.

Congratulations to the people responsible for the Silverton Wine and Jazz Festival. It just gets bigger and better every year.

The festival on May 8 was a big success with crowded streets, packed venues and smiles on everyone’s faces.

I found my groove at Creekside Grill with its good food, a glass of fine local wine and the smooth jazz of the John Moak Trio. Can Heaven be far away?

And there was a pleasant conversation with the portrait artist Diane Russell who paints jazz musicians in the very essence of the word jazz. She is a great artist whose work will be on display at the Creekside Grill through this month.

A friend sneakily chose to put mention of my birthday in the Mount Angel Shopper so I may as well tell you the code I live with. Aother friend sent me this advice that he probably read somewhere:

“Life should not be a journey to the grave with the intention of arriving a pretty, well-preserved body but instead to be thoroughly used up, totally worn out and proclaiming “Wow! What a ride!”

Well, as my years roll by, the more I appreciate this advice. While I may have slowed down at 89 years old, I am still scootin.’
