91 years of memories: Saying good-bye to Monitor School
Peggy Glaede’s personal history is so intertwined with Monitor School that the school’s impending closure makes her feel like she is “losing a relative or close friend.”

Unfortunately, Kropf said, many people believe school lunches are the culprit for the increase in childhood obesity in America. “The lunch program is a good scapegoat,” said Kropf, who is the food services manager for the Silver Falls School District. “We give kids a choice on what they can get so I feel that should take some of the blame off us.”
Thanks to more than a quarter of a million dollars in federal grant money, students walking and biking to Robert Frost Elementary School should see some improvements on their route next fall.
Six Silver Falls School District employees will be recognized as Employees of the Year at the First Citizen banquet Feb. 20.
The closure of Monitor Elementary School this June will result in new students for both Scotts Mills and Butte Creek schools in the fall of 2010.
Budget cuts.
Federal and state mandates for school reform. Personnel problems. Changing technology and more budget cuts. Unifying several school districts to become the Silver Falls School District. Attempting to pass a bond. Failing to pass a bond. Finally, passing a bond. Building a new high school… As the superintendent of the Silver Falls School District, Craig Roessler has had myriad situations cross his desk – some easy to fix and some taking time.
Robert Frost Elementary School Principal Beth Davisson was the first to call Andy Bellando boss, but she certainly won’t be the last.
Silver Fall School District superintendent candidate Andy Bellando and his wife, Rhonda, have three children, Amanda, 21; Jaron, 19; Tyler, 17. His hobbies are farming, bicycling, running and skiing.
Either Andy Bellando or Linda Myers will be the next superintendent of the Silver Falls School District. School board members unanimously agreed at the Oct. 5 meeting to hire an internal candidate rather open the search to candidates outside the district. The board met in executive session on Oct. 12 and will review the candidates Oct. 26.
Silver Fall School District superintendent candidate Linda Myers and her husband, Paul, have three children, Cole, 10; Elise, 6; and Emerson, 3. This winter, Linda and Paul are traveling to China to adopt 1-year-old Jack. Her hobbies are scrapbooking, singing, playing with her children and “anything outside in the sun!”
There isn’t anything like it in Silverton. Coming in at more than 200,000 square feet, Silverton High School’s new Pine Street campus is the largest structure in the city. With technology integrated into classrooms, a new media center and theater, it is one of the most technologically advanced buildings in Silverton.

By Katie Tolmachoff Char Strunk, secretary at Mark Twain Middle School, is retiring after nearly 30 years of service in education, 20 of them with the Silver Falls School District. At times, Strunk jested, the workplace has felt like a three-ring circus. Perhaps that explains her enormous collection of elephants of various size, texture and shape surrounding her desk, hanging […]
The Silver Falls School District may have to eliminate 18 school days or as many as 32 teachers to balance its budget for 2009-10. How cuts are made will be determined by two factors, said Superintendent Craig Roessler.
Only four teams could advance from the regional Oregon’s Battle of the Books competition March 14 in McMinnville to the state competition April 4 at Chemeketa Community College.
By Kristine Thomas Attention parents – Do you know the requirements for your child to graduate from high school? Dandy Parsons, vice principal at Silverton High School, and Linda Myers, the elementary principal at Victor Point and Central Howell schools and the director of curriculum and instruction, are encouraging parents to find out. “Parents need to know now what’s going […]
By Kristine Thomas Both Mt. Angel School District Superintendent Bob Young and Silver Falls School District Superintendent Craig Roessler are nervously anticipating the March state revenue forecast, which is to be released Feb. 20. What that forecast says will determine the funding school districts receive from the state of Oregon for the remainder of this school year and possibly the […]
By Kristine Thomas In August, Robert Frost Elementary School in Silverton learned it did not meet the Average Yearly Progress requirements outlined under the federal No Child Left Behind Act. This month, the school received an “Exceptional” rating on its report card from the Oregon Department of Education. The discrepancy between the two ratings is an example of the flaws […]
John F. Kennedy and Silverton High Schools are running at full speed now that the new school year has started and coaching positions have been filled.
Kevin Moffatt, the athletic director at Kennedy is excited about the volleyball year with the hiring of Sarah Sprauer as head coach.
She is joined by assistants Jessica Bottaro and Erin Jasper. Sprauer is also a Mt. Angel Middle School social studies teacher, and Bottaro teaches the same subject at the high school.
Stacks of documents with hundreds of pages describing the conditions of the buildings in the Silver Falls School District have been whittled down to two documents – one by the district’s Facilities Master Plan Committee with four pages and the other by Randal Saunders, an architect from Woodburn, with eight pages.
Both documents will serve as guidelines for Silver Falls School Board members to make decisions in the future for its facilities, such as the fate of Eugene Field School, what’s to be done with Schlador Street high school campus after the completion of the Pine Street campus and where the district office should be located.
