New leader: Silverton Together manager passionate about helping families

Brenda Sturdevant hasn’t been manager at Silverton Together long, but her knowledge of family support, experience in community work and her enthusiastic way of looking at things brightens the organization’s future. Sturdevant, a proponent of Silverton Together, its staff and the community, is looking forward to her tenure as manager.

Church of Nazarene: Celebrating a trio of anniversaries

Last month, Silverton Church of the Nazarene celebrated three major anniversaries: the denomination’s 100th, the church’s 35th and the pastor’s 10th. On Oct. 5, the Silverton church joined with 18,000 other Nazarene churches in 151 world areas to commemorate the founding of the Church of the Nazarene.

Operation Starfish: Having a mentor makes a proven difference

Resort opens: Garden lodge includes restaurant, spa and conference center

After months of anticipation and a few delays, The Oregon Garden Resort opened for business Wednesday, Sept. 24. The lodge, conference center, restaurant and spa complex is owned and operated by Moonstone Properties. The resort’s marketing program is expected to bring many visitors to Silverton.

Put Me in, Coach: Kennedy, Silverton high schools add athletic staff

John F. Kennedy and Silverton High Schools are running at full speed now that the new school year has started and coaching positions have been filled.

Kevin Moffatt, the athletic director at Kennedy is excited about the volleyball year with the hiring of Sarah Sprauer as head coach.

She is joined by assistants Jessica Bottaro and Erin Jasper. Sprauer is also a Mt. Angel Middle School social studies teacher, and Bottaro teaches the same subject at the high school.

Reusable art: Market holds contest for bag logo

Silverton Farmers’ Market is holding an art contest to obtain an image to be featured on a reusable canvas market bag available next season.

“Many of our customers already use cloth bags. We want to offer an attractive bag that features the work of a local artist,” Market Manager Courtney Basile said. “I think our customers will appreciate having something unique that represents Silverton’s art and agriculture, while lessening the impact on the environment.”

Towne House: It’s like coming home

Glance over the Towne House Restaurant & Lounge menu, and you’ll notice right away an emphasis on plain ol’ American food. Towne House is known for its huge array of sandwiches, burgers, steaks, chicken and seafood, as well as its farm-style breakfasts. There’s something here for nearly everyone.

Fitting for a “foodie”: Event benefits Frank Lloyd Wright’s Gordon House

Architect Frank Lloyd Wright was a “foodie” say organizers of a fundraiser benefiting the Gordon House – the only Wright-designed building open to the public in the Pacific Northwest. The event’s planners point to Wright’s innovations for a small but functional kitchen he designed to be efficient, convenient and inspirational for food preparation.

Wright designed the home for Conrad and Evelyn Gordon, who built the house on their Clackamas County farm in 1964. To raise funds to maintain the Gordon House, now located next to The Oregon Garden in Silverton, there will be an evening of food and wine, a silent auction and a drawing with a “wine wall.”
