Haven’t you always planned to get out and really explore Silverton? But, like many plans, never did? Well, here’s your chance to cross that one off your bucket list of things you’d like to do before – oh, never mind, just do it!
No one participating in or cheering on the runners at the Homer’s Classic 8K on Aug. 8 will be surprised that there are women running in the 27th annual edition of this Silverton road race. In recent years, females as young as 8 and as old as 80 have participated in the Homer 8K, a distance just under 5 miles.
On July 7, Luke Ferguson will travel to Australia to become part of a football team that will compete in an international tournament. KayLynne Kuenzi does likewise for volleyball about a week later.
Kevin Palmer, Scott Gragg, Mary Purdy and Mary Steers are a handful of the athletes participating in the Silverton Rotary Club’s May Madness Alumni Basketball Extravaganza. John F. Kennedy and Silverton High Schools are running at full speed now that the new school year has started and coaching positions have been filled.
Kevin Moffatt, the athletic director at Kennedy is excited about the volleyball year with the hiring of Sarah Sprauer as head coach.
She is joined by assistants Jessica Bottaro and Erin Jasper. Sprauer is also a Mt. Angel Middle School social studies teacher, and Bottaro teaches the same subject at the high school.
