JFK’s Kristine Osuna named Gates Scholar

Kennedy High School senior Kristine Osuna was awarded a Gates Millennium Scholar. She competed against more than 20,500 applicants and only 1,000 students were chosen to receive scholarships. She plans to attend La Sierra University in Riverside, Cal., with a career interest in medicine. This program is for outstanding minority students and requires applicants to write essays outlining their leadership and community service. She is active in FFA, FBLA, Habitat for Humanity, NHS, Friends of Rachel and does community service projects.

“This is a big opportunity for me to succeed and it shows that when you go up and above what is expected of you, it pays off,” she said. “It’s possible for not just me, but anyone who tries. Trying is the key; we can never overcome challenges if we don’t try.”
