The Man About Town: Flip-flop philosophy

The ManPete Buffington reports that his Abiqua Wind Vineyard’s 2007 Mueller Thurgau recently won a double gold medal in an international competition in San Francisco. Their 2006 Early Muscat also won a double gold at last year’s event, proving that there is quite an emerging wine region on the east side of I-5. The Man says to quit yer “wining” and stop by the vineyard and try some.

You know, it’s not often that The Man carries a purse (in public anyway) but if I did I would buy one of the Stone Buddha’s new bags. Buddha babe Renee Bianchi says that the bags and baskets are handmade in Guatemala and are mainly made of pull-tabs. The quite fashionable bags must be seen to be appreciated – in fact, I think I may have recognized quite a few of the tabs.

Ever wonder what is “Within The Walls” of some of Silverton’s finest historical homes and buildings? You’re in luck, because July 19 is the date for the Silverton Heritage Home Tour. This year’s tour will feature 11 locations for you to visit and celebrate Silverton’s best architectural treasures. For more information check out the ad on page 23 in this edition of Our Town Life.

Is it just me or does it seem that the Silver Falls Library can’t possibly be old enough to need new siding? It makes The Man wonder just how much more handsome I could be if I got new skin every 10 years.

Dentist Dr. Michael Kim has started a new program to recognize individuals who go above and beyond the call of duty. “Local Hero” winners will receive a $100 gift card to Roth’s Family Markets and the admiration of the entire area. So, if you know of such a person, an outstanding individual, a pillar of society, someone that everyone wants to be like, someone stunningly good looking, like, I don’t know, like maybe that The Man fella, contact Dr Kim’s office for a nomination form.

On the closure front, Mi Familia Café and Bakery in Mt. Angel recently threw in the towel – the business is for sale – and Silverton Coffee Station has ceased operations. Coffee Station owner Jim Brown is looking for a buyer for the year-old business, too. The Man says Josh Thomas, who garnered national media attention for his lemonade stand should kick it up a notch and take over the Water Street location.

In the spirit of my rivals in the presidential race and in the interest of time and space efficiency I hereby reverse my stand on every issue that I have ever had an opinion on. If I said it was black, now it is white – if I said it was hot, now it is cold. In fact, just figure that no matter what the issue The Man has flip flopped more than a salmon on a river bank. If this disappoints any of you who actually agreed with any of my ideas wait a few minutes, just like Oregon weather and those other candidates, it will likely soon change back to whatever I think you want to hear.

Change, a wise-guy once said, is inevitable. Traditions are born, grow and then often change to fit new situations and new circumstances. The recent unilateral decision to “relocate” Homer Davenport Days (from the first weekend in August to third weekend in July) is a case in point.

‘Another perfect day…’ Thoughts on the City of Angels, or Dreams

Randy Newman had it right: “I Love L.A.” – with an exclamation mark! I and a couple of my kids recently spent a long weekend in Los Angeles and, while I’m certainly no expert on that city, there’s way more to it than meets the eye. I once was talking with an acquaintance who moved to L.A. from the Midwest. […]
