The Silverton Rural Fire Protection District was formed in 1946 and contracted with the city of Silverton to provide fire protection in 1947. Voters agreed to merge the Scotts Mills Fire District with the Silverton Fire District in 1992. The district covers 106 square miles with five stations, seven paid staff and more than 70 volunteers.

Silverton Fire District Chief Bill Miles’ goals for 2014 are:

1.Determine whether voters will support a bond levy. Voters approved a bond levy in 2008 which expires in 2015. He plans to have meetings with the public to determine if they will support a bond levy.

2. Continue to apply for grants to pay for equipment and other items. For example, a grant was recently written to replace 180 air bottles by 2017 with each one costing $1,000.

3. Recruit volunteers. Volunteers are trained to handle situations from medical assists to four-alarm fires. They meet each Wednesday for training. To volunter, stop by the station, visit the website or contact Rick Heuchert at 503-873-5328 or [email protected].

4. Continue to make the fire district visible to the community served. “We are moving in a direction to have electronic media and newsletters available to our customers – the community we serve.”

5. Continue to expand services in providing community service and education in fire prevention.
