Silverton and Kennedy will be sending a pair of district champions to the OSAA state cross country championships on Nov. 2 at Lane Community College in Eugene.
Junior Lauren Stokley of Kennedy won the Class 3A-2A-1A Special District 2 championship, running a 19:57.8 for 5,000 meters Oct. 24 at Bush’s Pasture Park in Salem. The Trojan boys squad, meanwhile, qualified for the state meet by taking second place behind East Linn Christian. Sophomore Adrian Parra finished second for Kennedy in 16:56.2. Senior Dalton Susee (17:16.6) was fifth and freshman Noe Jines was 11th (17:53.3).
Stokley will race at 10 a.m., while the Kennedy boys run at 10:35 a.m.
Silverton, meanwhile, will send two individuals to the Class 5A meet. Senior Jonathan Sisley won the Mid-Willamette district title by running 16:28 for 5K on Oct. 23 at Cheadle Lake Park in Lebanon. Sophomore Maddie Fuhrman took third in the girls race in 19:08. The Fox boys team took third and the the girls team took fourth. Only the top two squads qualify their full teams. Fuhrman runs at 1:15 p.m. Saturday at Lane, with Sisley starting at 1:50 p.m.
Football: Silverton finished the regular season 8-1 overall and 6-1 in the Mid-Willamette Conference. The Foxes earned a bye in this weekend’s first round of the Class 5A playoffs and will host a second round game Nov. 8. Silverton, which is ranked sixth by the OSAA, lost only to No. 2 West Albany, 13-0 on Sept. 27. The Foxes outscored their final four opponents 196-18.
Kennedy, meanwhile was 5-3 overall and 4-1 in the Tri-River Conference heading into Friday’s game versus visiting Santiam. The Trojans have clinched second place in the league and one of the 16 Class 2A playoff spots. The Trojans, who played their usual tough nonconference schedule, are ranked seventh by the OSAA.
Soccer: The Silverton boys team was 3-2-1 in Mid-Willamette play and 5-6-1 overall heading into its finale at Dallas, which came Oct. 29, after the Our Town presstime. The Foxes are ranked 12th by the OSAA under new Coach Kyle Calder, a 2010 graduate of Philomath High who is in his first year as a varsity coach.
“We are still working out some kinks in our system that will need to be smoothed out before we get to the playoffs,” Calder said. “I think once those have been figured out, and we keep playing the way we have been, we could find a lot of success come postseason.”
The Silverton girls, meanwhile, are 6-4-2 overall and 2-2-2 in the Mid-Willamette heading into their Oct. 29 finale against Dallas. The Foxes are ranked 13th by the OSAA and are in line for a possible home playoff match.
Fifth-year Coach Fred George noted the leadership of seniors and captains Stephanie Russ, Lilly Paradis and Sheyenne Brusven. “This season has seen some major improvements for this program,” said George, who said he thinks the team might have the right stuff to advance to the Class 5A quarterfinals.
Volleyball: Kennedy is 19-4 overall and 14-2 in the Tri-River and has clinched one of the league’s playoffs spots. The Trojans, who are ranked seventh by the OSAA, are likely to play a home match Saturday with a berth in the Nov. 8-9 eight-team state tournament at Ridgeview High in Redmond on the line.
