Water Mountains has great variety

Looking for a cool place to eat outdoors? Water Mountains located at the outskirts of Silverton toward Silver Falls has the answer. Owner Obed Lopez and his family provide customers with a large covered patio for outdoor dining or you can eat inside the many-windowed restaurant. Either way, you will enjoy viewing lush green trees and a peek at nearby Silver Creek.

Open seven days a week from 8 a.m. to 9 p.m., Water Mountains is the place for simple American dishes as well as Mexican entrees and appetizers. Assisted by his wife, Angelina, in the kitchen and children, Obed and Ibed, Lopez offers just about anything one could want and at any time of the day.

Breakfast is available all day. “People like that,” Lopez said. “As the owner, I’m here to sell food, I don’t care what it is.” Salads and appetizers such as nachos and quesadillas are also available any time, and there’s always a homemade soup of the day.

In his opinion there are two best breakfast choices. “It’s between the Mexican breakfast burritos and the Country Mountain Breakfast,” he said. Pick a couple of breakfast burritos accompanied by hash browns or home fries, or choose biscuits, two sausage patties and scrambled eggs, all topped with country gravy and potatoes on the side.  Both are priced at $7.95.

Other items on the breakfast menu include corned beef, steak or pork chops, each served with eggs; pancakes, waffles and French toast; and several three-egg omelets. Prices range from $6.95 to $7.95.

At lunch and dinner, it’s bring-on-the-burgers time. Water Mountains lists a daily special of cheeseburger and fries for $4.50. “It’s very popular,” Lopez said. Several burger variations are on the menu, as are wraps, a house specialty because “they’re healthier and lower in calories,” he said.

Wraps come with chicken, fajitas, steak or seafood with a choice of fries, seasoned fries, homemade potato salad, coleslaw, and soup or house green salad. There are several sandwiches or fish, chicken strips or shrimp, all with fries. “When I’m making my menu I like to give people lots of choices,” said Lopez.

For dinner, beef, pork or chicken comes with soup or salad plus a choice of baked potato, fries, rice or mashed potatoes. Seafood and pasta dishes round out the  menu. Entrees range from $8.95 to $13.95.Don’t forget to check for the senior menu where you will find smaller portions and prices.

Water Mountains is located at 1397 S. Water St., Silverton. Phone 503-873-6089.

Dogs and students: Lessons in learning and love

Almost everyone knows pets are good for you, but when they become part of a special needs class, their impact is seen in a more tangible way. Juvenile crime an issue of attitude

In her 10th year of work with Silverton Youth Peer Court, Cynthia Schaeffer is noticing a trend she’s never seen before.

Theft is up from last year. Between January and May of 2008, 33 percent of peer court cases were theft-related, up 10 percent from the same period in 2007. But theft fluctuates year to year, and she isn’t worried about the jump in cases.
