Picking projects: Teen crews set out to help community

Last year, St. Paul\'s Catholic Church youths gathered before heading out to do community projects. They plan similar assistance this month. The youth of St. Paul’s Catholic Church in Silverton have decided to give back to both the overall community and to the church by providing helpful services. On Jan. 10 about 15 teenagers will break into work crews to complete several projects.

One crew will head into the homes of Silverton residents in need of assistance of setting up the digital boxes that will soon be necessary for TV reception on sets without cable or satellite service. Anyone from Silverton can call the church to sign up for a time slot for installation.

The second project that day will be to paint the Coffee & Room. It is a room used for many purposes especially fellowship after mass on Sunday.

The teens also will take back pop cans from a collection shed in St. Paul’s parking lot. It has been an important source of recycling for church members and it is an easy way raise money for the youth programs, said Lena Baldwin, coordinator of St. Paul’s Youth Ministry.

The fourth project that day will be a grounds crew to address outdoor landscaping concerns.

Volunteers planning to participate include Emily Desantis, Dean Fleshman, Daniel Fleshman, Grant Martinson, Angela Castro, Katie Golan, Katie Appleton, Annie Appleton, Kari Appleton, Bitsie Appleton, Joe Little, Naomi Hare, Casey Cahoon and Alyssa Donahue.
