Donna Snyder of The Red Bench is at it again. This time, she is opening a new store across the street, featuring, in her words, “A garden, Tuscan, Old World and Western theme.”

The shop has a separate garden room with plants and other yard features, a large showroom with Tuscan and Old World-style collectibles, art and home décor items. The Western room is highlighted with Old West-style collectibles, art, and other theme items for the home.

Snyder also has three spaces left for rent.

Grand opening is scheduled for Dec. 5, coinciding with Silverton’s First Friday. Jeremy Crowfoot will be on the piano and the wines of Piluso’s Vineyards will be offered from 7-9 p.m. A ribbon-cutting ceremony hosted by the Silverton Area Chamber of Commerce and Mayberry’s will be at 2 p.m. that same day.

“Hair spoken here” is the motto for Bangs & Burns, a new barbershop and salon at 207 N. First St.

Darrel Mathews and his wife of 13 years, Marion Varney, had a soft opening on Nov. 3 and their opening celebration on the day after Thanksgiving Day.

Mathews is a retired Navy chief petty officer radioman, but he has done a variety of things in his career. He joked that he has “officially retired four times.”

The couple started Bangs & Burns in Brookings, and say the concept is a “barber/salon,” where men and women feel equally comfortable. Men’s and women’s haircuts are priced at $16, and simple trims start at $6. Other services include coloring, facial wax and cosmetology. Their “product” includes the Crew and Redken lines.

THE CHOCOLATE BOX

The Chocolate Box
202 N. Water St.
Silverton
Monday – Sunday
through December,
11:30 a.m. – 5:30 p.m.

Aylene Geringer and Mark Zipkin understand one basic principal – chocolate is good. Why else would a former trial attorney (Geringer) and garment manufacturer/importer (Zipkin) give up their trades and their former San Juan Island bed and breakfast to start a gourmet chocolate shop?

Opening Dec. 5, in time for Silverton’s First Friday, the couple will partner with Mayberry’s (next door) for music, wine, chocolate-tasting, and getting acquainted with their new community members.

There will be a chocolate-tasting event from 4 to 9 p.m. at the opening, and both Piluso wines and sparkling cider will be offered. Like their next-door neighbor, Mayberry’s, a ribbon-cutting ceremony will take place at 2 p.m. on the Dec. 5.

Carrie Wong of Extreme Chocolates in Salem will be the primary chocolate queen, with imported European chocolate used to make artisan chocolates by hand. The shop will feature truffles, turtles, caramels, embossed truffles, sugar-free chocolate, specialty cocoa powder mixes, chocolate lollipops, and a host of other “extreme” treats.

Geringer and Zipkin also will have coconut bars, chocolate and wine pairings collections, an Amity Vineyard Pinot noir raspberry chocolate sauce, Harry and David truffles and moose munch, and a decadent liquor-based ganache sauce for pouring over fruit or ice cream.

Geringer and Zipkin moved to Silverton from Los Angeles, purchasing a home last year, and are excited to become part of the community.

Silverton’s only tattoo business is now open, thanks to James Moyer.

Moyer, who has lived in the area most of his life, said he offers a clean, upscale, safe tattoo service.

“We want to cater to anyone and everyone who has always wanted a tattoo, and we guarantee that our tools are 100 percent single use and disposable,” he said.

He trained for years under Bee-Pierced in Salem, and has literally thousands of designs at his fingertips. But, he added, people should come in with their own ideas and designs. “We want people, young and old, to express their ideas and feel very comfortable.”

Empyre Tattoo does custom work, touchups, original designs, and cover-ups. Moyer says he has been an artist “since I was little.”

Greg Olson has opened this full-service gas station at 621 N. Water St., Silverton. The station features tire sales, tune-ups, oil changes, brake repairs, transmissions, electrical work, computer specialties, and, best of all for gas-price weary travelers – the lowest gas prices in town ($1.99 for regular unleaded). The gas is Conoco Phillips.

He said hourly rates for mechanical work are very competitive as well.

Olson, originally from Tigard, bought the former Dahlberg station from Jim Wood and opened shop on Oct. 2. He was a service master technician at Landmark Ford for 13 years. Dan Swing is the shop’s transmission specialist.
