More than $8,000 was raised by 68 golfers playing in the sixth annual Fr. Bernard Youth Center Summer Golf Scramble at Evergreen Golf Course in Mount Angel on Aug. 21.
Due to several large weddings on the preceding Saturday, the event was played on Sunday this year and began with a morning Mass celebrated by Bishop Steiner of the Archdiocese of Portland. Jeremy Reding, co-owner of Evergreen Golf Course, said he is not aware of a Mass having been celebrated at the course previously. “At least not in the eight years since we bought it.”
“Bishop Steiner has been one of our great supporters since the beginning stages for Fr. Bernard Youth Center”, said Fred Vandecoevering, the center’s volunteer President of the Board of Directors. “In fact, we were recently reminded it was he who wrote the first check in the amount of $1,000 to launch the youth center from a vision to a reality.”
With an annual budget of approximately $300,000, functions such as the Golf Scramble are a vital to the youth center. Sponsors provided more than $3,500 in cash and prizes. Tournament Sponsor West Coast Bank in Mount Angel played a major role. Hole sponsors included: 4B Farms, Al’s Garden Centers, Butsch Insurance, Kuenzi Electric, Les Schwab Tires, Mount Angel Sausage Co., Pacific Office Automation, Staab Horticultural and Wells Fargo Bank.
Prize donors included: Al’s Garden Centers, Art Beyer Consulting, Benedictine Sisters, Bierhaus Pub, Bochsler’s Hardware, Bone Head Tattoo, Burger Time, Dini Designs, Frank-N-Steins Pub, Furniture Place, Jamie’s Barbershop, Mount Angel 76, Mount Angel Abby Bookstore, Mount Angel Sausage Co.
