Silverton Country Museum plans open house

Silverton Country Historical Society members invite community members to discover the historical treasures at the museum and see the addition to its 100-year-old building.

The open house is 2-4 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 23 at the museum, 428 S. Water St.

SCHS board of directors member Larry Thomas spearheaded and was directly involved in construction of an interior passageway between the gray-painted museum building and the neighboring gold-painted former railroad depot, part of which houses the Silverton Area Chamber of Commerce.

SCHS member Victor Madge was the architect on the project, and Jim Berukoff, Full Line Construction, performed the preliminary work.

Visitors will be able to move from one building to the other to observe historical objects on display.

Until now, the depot was rarely opened because of a lack of supervision by museum hosts, although touring schoolchildren were taken through it.

A surveillance system will be installed to guard again theft, the board has decided.

The museum houses artifacts on the history of Silverton, including many of its pioneer families.

A Slice of the Pie: Who you gonna call? Ghostbusters or a plumber?

I recently learned something rather astounding – if you ask for ghost stories, prepare for an onslaught. Houses, storefronts, restaurants, nursing homes – and apparently nearly every school in area – all come with a ghost story or two attached. And many of them took place in… bathrooms?  Which prompts the question – why bathrooms? Because – and I don’t […]
