Diversity downtown: Silverton offers up a cultural smorgasbord

From the soft plunking of harp strings to yoga demonstrations, historic downtown Silverton will come alive with talent on April Fool’s Day. More than 30 shops and businesses are expected to host gifted performers from a variety of cultures at the city’s First Friday event, said Doreen Kelly, program coordinator with Silverton Together.

Honoring diversity: Festival unites town

On April 2, the travel route to Greece, France and China is the same as for Ireland, Italy and Mexico. That evening all it takes to experience the music or food of more than 20 countries is a stroll through historic downtown Silverton. Silverton Together is once again hosting Celebration of Cultures from 6-9 p.m. Friday, April 2. The event takes place in conjunction with the Silverton Chamber of Commerce’s First Friday event.

Spirit of giving: Charities that assist community gather financial support

Three organizations in Silverton are in the spotlight this month as they deal with the downward turn of the economy. Community contributions help support Silverton Together, the Silverton Hospital Foundation and Silverton Area Community Aid – two of them are in the midst of fundraising drives.

New leader: Silverton Together manager passionate about helping families

Brenda Sturdevant hasn’t been manager at Silverton Together long, but her knowledge of family support, experience in community work and her enthusiastic way of looking at things brightens the organization’s future. Sturdevant, a proponent of Silverton Together, its staff and the community, is looking forward to her tenure as manager.

Operation Starfish: Having a mentor makes a proven difference

Doreen Kelly of Silverton Together is looking for adults who want to make a difference by being a mentor to children in their community. Right now, she said, she has 20 adults who are eager to participate in Silverton Together’s Operation Starfish Mentor program.
