Letter to the Editor: Thank you, Silverton

I have been compiling a list on the corner of my desk this year.  It is nearly Thanksgiving and almost 11 months since my father John Schmidt, died.  As I closed up his family business of 66 years, sold his real estate holdings, paid debts, and finalize his estate, I wrote down all of the Silverton businesses and business members of our community that have been so compassionate and helpful to me.

Dr. John loved this town.  He made his living here and he utilized the businesses and other professionals here. Our community becomes stronger when we work within it.  I appreciate and I’m thankful for the following local individuals and businesses:

Citizen’s Bank, Canen Madsen, Milla Eubank, and staff

Columbia Bank, Ferren Taylor and staff

Dennis Downey Construction

Dr. Daniel Coté

Dr. Mike Petracci

Dr. Steve DeShaw

Hartley Insurance Inc.

Jossi Davidson

Kris Hustead

Larsen and Flynn Ins., Rick Schmidt

MAPS CU., Debra Weigel and staff

NW Oregon RE Group, Joe Giegerich

Randy Mitchell, CPA and staff

RE/MAX; Trudi Schmidt

Silverton Chamber of Commerce

Silverton Realty, Mason Branstetter Chuck White, and staff

State Farm, Waterman’s Ins.

Ticor Title, Silverton Branch staff

Ungers Funeral Chapel, Paul Rupp and staff

And, best of success to White Oak Wellness that is now open in 306 Oak St.

Michael J. Schmidt

The neurological disease is also known as Lou Gehrig’s disease. While ALS can be difficult to diagnose, lacking a single definitive test, I am experiencing difficulties with speech and a loss of coordination. […]

A Grin at the End: Algorithm monster – Pushing us to the edge on purpose

For six hours last month we were all safe. Safe from misinformation, safe from ads targeted at us. Safe from posts that were only there because someone paid for them. Facebook and Instagram were offline. How this happened is anyone’s guess. Facebook said the “configuration” got out of whack. That is IT talk for “I don’t know.” Someone at headquarters […]

Rethink Eugene Field: Guest Opinion

Stu Rasmussen On Aug. 6 the Silverton City Council voted to spend over $700,000 of our taxpayer dollars to demolish the historic Eugene Field School to make way for a new City Hall with no plan how to pay for a new building. Here are my three minutes of comments to the council prior to their vote, and if you […]
