By Vince Gilliam
I have been recently told that I am likely one of the thousands of Americans who may be afflicted with ALS or amyotrophic lateral sclerosis. The neurological disease is also known as Lou Gehrig’s disease.
While ALS can be difficult to diagnose, lacking a single definitive test, I am experiencing difficulties with speech and a loss of coordination.
I’m fortunate to have access to quality health care including the kind support of the ALS Center & Association Chapter in Oregon.
Preliminary evaluations were inconclusive and we’ve been pursuing procedures that may identify or rule out conditions that mimic ALS.
I’m especially grateful to be mobile and active and we’re looking forward to positive results from upcoming tests and therapies.
Becky and I feel it’s important to open our hearts and share this possible but likely diagnosis of ALS with you as my constituents and friends, in a more public way.
In many ways I feel fine and intend to enjoy the years God gives me pursuing meaningful opportunities including and with your support, serving you in the Oregon Legislature.
While we appreciate your respect for our family privacy just now, please know you are welcome to reach me at [email protected].
Thank you for the honor to serve as your State Representative.
I still marvel as I walk (perhaps not as smoothly now) through the rotunda of our State Capitol to our district office.
But if symptoms should make it too difficult to continue, I will leave with the greatest love for this state and our district and celebrate our optimism for the future.
I also wanted to share that faith has been crucial for facing this new chapter of life. Becky and I are finding comfort in these words of Jesus: “I have told you these things, so that in me you may have peace. In this world, you will have trouble. But take heart! I have overcome the world.”
May God always bless you,
Vic Gilliam
