Mark Twain Middle School eighth-grader Breeanna Drew, 13, created the winning poster for Silver Falls Library’s centennial.
Assigning the poster to her advanced art students, Mark Twain teacher Shana Chandler told them to pitch or sell their ideas in sketchbooks. Sharing their ideas brought feedback from her and other students. “Getting feedback is really helpful,” she said.
Breeanna jumped in. “There was no poking or prodding,” Chandler said. “There was enthusiasm and passion.” After Breeanna showed her teacher three ideas, they chose one showing books exploding from the roof of a library. It was colorful, dynamic — and it won the judges’ hearts.
She had no particular source of inspiration, she said, “but I wanted it to ‘pop!’ and to be unique.”
Breeanna’s always had an interest in art. “Like all little kids, I liked to draw,” she said. “My dad was an artist, a tattoo artist, and that’s where I got it, my love of art. I would watch my dad do tattoos.” One reason she entered the contest was that she was familiar with the library, where her mother is a volunteer. “I felt comfortable there,” she said.
Her art classes inspired her career goal: “Because of my art experiences,” she said, “I want to be a fashion designer when I grow up.”
