The Welcome, a Healing Journey for War Veterans and their Families is a documentary film about 24 war veterans with post traumatic stress disorder who gathered for a five-day retreat in Southern Oregon with friends and family on a journey toward healing.
The documentary is being shown Thursday, Feb. 7, 6 p.m. at Silverton High School, 1456 Pine St. The film is suitable for persons 13 or older. Cash donations will be appreciated to cover the cost of the film as well as can food donations for SACA.
The Welcome documents the journey of how the men and women take an unusual route to find their way back home again.
Silverton resident Duane Dahlum is bringing the movie to Silverton to show civilians the impact of going to war has on military and National Guard families.
“People need to learn to listen before talking and not judge, to support our families, neighbors and friends who are returning from war,” Dahlum said. “If we are going to do our part, they cannot be invisible anymore. That is what this documentary is about.”
The film changes perceptions, he said, and makes connections so in the end, “we are all welcomed home after a disorienting journey, returning again to a common humanity.”
