Something for the Soul: Gratitude – A gift you give yourself

Winnie BoltonBy Winnie Bolton

Years ago our children having completed college and out working, some married and starting families of their own, I envisioned writing each one a letter thanking them for their unaware contributions to my growth as a human being – the concerns, the anxious moments, the trying of my patience, the understanding and adjustments on my side as well as theirs in a fast, changing world of morality.

Truly, I grew searching out knowledge from books, lectures, wise adults and prayer, but always I held fast to the thoughts: “Ask and you shall receive.”

It’s called faith: humble enough to listen; quiet enough to hear; calm enough to trust. The source of energy is God and it’s always there. We just need to tune in.

I believe that with prayer no matter what difficulties came my children’s way or my way either with each other or with others we can find the strength and God’s divine love to conquer and forgive.

“Happiness, kindness and love” were the words vigorously sung at the top of my lungs when the children argued, like all kids do around the house.

Now in jest, they remind me of my singing. I’m just glad they still remember the good ol’ days of growing up. We had so much fun.

So far, I’ve completed only one letter; I still have four more to write.

Putting thoughts on paper is my preference because when I write I dig deeply into parts of myself quietly expressing feelings that are difficult to share by talking from heart.

To say I have learned volumes of insight from raising our children, conversing with them, discussing anything and everything is a huge understatement.

So blessed without measure am I, with their intelligence, courage, wit, generosity and empathy.

However, the one quality I adore in each of my children (now adults) is their unique sense of humor in delicate situations – so like their dad.

That’s my Valentine’s gift to myself, “gratitude” on my favorite day of the year.

People Out Loud: Coming Together

We Are One. What a concept in this tumultuous year filled with bad news, hatred, worldwide conflicts, partisan politics and unified efforts with the sole purpose of winning arguments at someone else’s expense and exposing differences as a means of ridiculing. Who’s your friend? What could you possibly have in common?  How can we expect to get along when we aren’t […]

People Out Loud: Not Mayberry

By Dixon Bledsoe With the NCAA Men’s Basketball champion now decided (Duke over Wisconsin, 68-63), I have some vivid memories of March Madness, great games, huge upsets, and an unexpected meeting of the coach who led Duke to its fifth title. I was in line to a Las Vegas show with a business partner several years ago, and turned around. […]
