Man About Town: My kind of diet . . . ‘in some cases mild death may occur’

By Jim Kinghorn

It’s an annual rite of spring. They start out small, growing larger as the temperature starts to rise, often in the same locations  as last year …. no, The Man is not talking about daffodils, it’s the potholes that pop up in the streets around town. Silverton Public Works Director Gerald Fisher wants you to know his staff is on it, but be patient as he has instructed his crews to fix them the correct way which will require a bit of favorable weather and a little more time. To report your favorite crater, call 503-873-6359.

Didya see the four page spread on Silverton in AAA’s Via magazine? The article, titled “Small town, big charms” touts all of the stuff we already know about our little slice of heaven. In addition to the ubiquitous  Silver Falls, Oregon Garden and Gordon House references, it gives a shout to several of our local businesses and features a great “come on down, we’re friendly!” shot of The Chocolate Box’s Aylene Geringer. You can also check it out at AAA.com/via

Speaking of business, there’s lots of activity so saddle up for another installment of The Man’s Business Musical Chairs…..Former local NAPA store owners Eric and Norma Stroup decided  semi-retirement wasn’t near enough fun so they bought back the Silverton and Mount Angel locations. Dominic Kalberer moved his Video Game Wizards one block south where Young Life used to be, Cat’s Meow bridal shop moved from Lewis Street to the spot the Wizards left and Silver Falls Pawn Shop has opened in the former Treasures location on Jersey Street. Jillian Galindo, formerly of Blondie’s, will open Cherry Red Salon where the Hair Hut used to be, Shayla Lynn has opened her handmade jewelry and gifts store where Pomegranate was, Hand Me Downs kids resale clothing will open at 105 S. Water and Chuck Tauer is opening Books N Time bookstore at 210 N. Water St. … and yes, there will be a test.

Don’t miss out on all the deals at the Silverton Kiwanis Spring Garage Sale, coming up March 29 – 30 from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. The proceeds from the sale go into a scholarship fund for deserving local students. The event is being held at the Seven Brides Taproom so this year, you can even get a beer with your bargains…

When The Man was in high school, the only thing I thought about was being out of high school. These days the kids have to do a senior project and Daniel Hammer chose fundraising for the new Mount Angel Festhalle. This Daniel character seems like a fine young man and he deserves your support. For a measly 10 bucks you can get a chance to win one of a list of great prizes he has lined up. To help a brother and your community out, call 503-845-6446 for ticket info…

The Man’s Quote of the month: “Just be thankful that we’re not getting all the government we’re paying for” – Will Rogers

Breaking News: Diner suffers cardiac arrest – Who knew that could happen while eating something called a “Triple Bypass Burger”… how was he supposed to know it contained “3 slabs of meat, 12 bacon rashers, cheese, onions, tomato and unique special sauce,” not to mention the order of “Flatliner Fries”….I mean, someone should have warned him that ingesting a 6,000 calorie sandwich might have “ramifications”….of course the name “Heart Attack Grill” (ironically owned by a former Jenny Craig nutritionist) might have been a tipoff. If only he could have washed it down with one of those Bacon Milkshakes The Man told you about last month…..

See you on the street…

Schools fail to achieve benchmarks

By Kristine Thomas If a physical education teacher places the high-jump bar at 2 feet, it’s likely the majority of his high school students will clear it. As the teacher raises the bar higher, the number of students able to clear it is likely to decrease. The recent release of the 2007-08 preliminary federal ratings under No Child Left Behind […]

Something for the Soul: What a quandry

Words, words, what do they mean? Even when we put them into sentences trying to express our thoughts, they don’t always say what we intend, hard as we try.
