Man About Town: There goes Mooster Man

By Jim Kinghorn

Hey kids, you can help The Oregon Garden get a $10,000 grant from the folks at Rainbird Irrigation. Just go www.iuowawards.com, click on the “find and vote” button and enter Silverton into the search box. You will then be prompted to vote for the Wetlands Treated Waste Water project. It’s as simple as that and you can vote every day until March 22.

Have you checked out the 9/11 mural David McDonald recently completed on C Street?  How about Kelly Farrah’s depiction of the Silverton Airfield at First and High streets? The Man knows our collection of unique murals is easy to take for granted so the next time you see one, imagine a blank wall in its place and then thank your stars and garters for Vince Till and the Silverton Mural Society.

Liz Steffen is opening The Mercantile in the bright yellow building at 207 High St. in Silverton. The shop will feature antiques and collectibles, pack and ship services, mailboxes, gift wrapping, fax and notary. If it’s time to cash out your Beanie Baby collection, Liz will also list them on e-Bay for you. For information or to be a vendor, call 503-999-5625

The Man’s quote of the month: “Politicians are people who, when they see a light at the end of the tunnel, go out and buy more tunnel” – John Quinton

Are you ready? Are you ready for some football?!? The Portland Monarchs semi-pro football team is moving to little ol’ Silverton with five home games scheduled this spring and summer. The lads put a very Oregon Duck-like spanking on most of the teams they played last year and are consistently ranked at the top of the Greater Northwest Football Association rankings. The Monarchs will also contribute to the Silverton High School athletic department, The Silver Fox Foundation and Silverton Area Community Aid as well as host a camp for youth and high school players. General manager Heath Wharton, working with partners Nike and Brand Athletic, have already donated more than $75,000 in gear and apparel to youth organizations, most of which are in Silverton and Mount Angel. The Man says they ought to be fun to watch (as long as Christina Aguilera and the Black Eyed Peas don’t show up). GO ‘ARCS!!!

You know how that Obama feller has appointed all of those czars to run parts of the government? Since The Man is pretty much the king of all he surveys in this neck of the woods, I hereby appoint Jerry Lauzon as “Czar of all local festivals.”  Whatever the J-man says, goes.

You know, it’s not like I knew them personally. Oh sure, most days they’d stand up and give me a wink and a wave if they were sure no one was looking, but it’s not like I was having them over for Sunday dinner. Now that my bovine friends are gone, I really miss them. In fact, every day when The Man drives past Mallorie’s Dairy and sees all the empty stalls, I can’t help but feel sad. Sad that a long- established family business that did things the right way couldn’t make it through the maze of price manipulation and governmental regulations and still survive. It feels like an end of an era…..and that should make us all sad.

See you on the street…..

Man About Town is a collection of hearsay, rumors and the occasional fact.  If you’ve got a tip, call The Man. If you read something here that you don’t like, don’t call – it will just encourage The Man to pick on you next.
