A resolution filed recently with Goldman Sachs by a group of Catholic nuns has business Internet sites buzzing. The Benedictine Sisters of Mount Angel are one of four orders challenging the investment banking and securities firm of excessively compensating its executives at the expense of other employees.
Sister Julia McGanty was astonished by her prioress’ request; so much so that she said she needed time to think about it. Become a hairdresser? she thought. Work outside the monastery? At that time, McGanty was working at the Benedictine Nursing Center, now the Providence Benedictine Nursing Center. She had set up the kitchen and worked on the floor caring for patients. A change of ministry, such as the prioress was asking, was a surprise.
Sister Immaculata Tuma can say words many other people cannot. “If I had to do my life all over again, I sure would do everything the same,” Tuma said, “I wouldn’t change a thing. I am glad I made the choices I made.”
Shalom Prayer Center, a ministry of the Benedictine Sisters, offers “Women of the Bible” – a retreat with a creative approach, focusing on the role of women in Biblical texts. The workshop takes place on Saturday, Oct. 3.
It is customary for an outgoing prioress in the Benedictine community at Queen of Angels Monastery to take a sabbatical after completing the rigors of four or eight years serving in leadership. Sr. Dorothy Jean Beyer, OSB, completed her second stint as prioress in June 2007 and, after serving in this role for 16 of the past 20 years, she was definitely ready for some respite and renewal before assuming a new position as director of Shalom Prayer Center.
