Letter to the editor: We did it – together!

To the Our Town editor:

Back in September 2008 a few people said it could not be done. They said Silverton Senior Center could not raise $100,000 to match a Ford Family Foundation challenge grant. Well, look at us now. Not only did we match it, we went far beyond that amount.

We would like to thank the following people who worked so hard to make this happen: Ken Hector, our former mayor, and the Senior Center Board of Directors, including Ruth Cock, Marcia Branstetter, Laurie Carter, Dave Ellis, Jim Gabriel, Sandy Sanford, Joe Start and Tully Stoffey. Without these people, we would have never made it.

But, most of all, I want to thank the hundreds of people who so generously donated to the project. Checks and cash from $25 and up have poured in to the center’s mailbox daily.

As of Sept. 15, the cut-off date for the match, we were at $140,000 and donations are still coming in.
Our thanks go to many Silverton residents, as well as to those contributors from the surrounding area.

Something for the Soul: Seeds of our subconscious

By Winnie Bolton Do you ever wonder about your subconscious mind? Recently, I read an essay, “The Will to Believe,” by the pragmatic psychologist/philosopher William James, who wrote that a person has the right to believe things that lack scientific evidence like the power of faith. Our subconscious mind is a recording machine reproducing whatever we impress upon it unknowingly […]
