The Man About Town: Covering it all – Bull riders, birthdays, B&Bs and big bucks

The Man

Silverton historian and long-time resident Jeff Brekas was back in town last week during the freak thunderstorms. Apparently Jeff was having an electrifying conversation when a nearby lightning strike sent a jolt through the phone strong enough to knock him to the floor. The Man was surprised to hear such a thing could happen, but I bet Jeff was shocked….

SK Sartell opened White Oaks Bed and Breakfast on Kloshe’ Lane in the hills above Silverton. The house has been featured in several national design magazines. Call SK at 503-873-1474 to book a stay.

Get ready to celebrate Oregon’s Sesqi, Sesqu, er….that 150 years old thing on July 11. Mt. Angel has big plans including a historic display, sausage and cake feed, a scavenger hunt, square dancing and a bonnet and dress fashion show. Mt. Angel, Scotts Mills and Silverton also will host stops on Marion County’s 150 miles for 150 years running relay. The program calls for Silverton Mayor Stu Rasmussen to send off the Silverton Runners Club on the last leg to Salem. Ooooh, The Man just had a vision of Stu running down Silverton Road in a tank top and 6-inch heels!… Ouch, that was one image I don’t need.

Speaking of things that are really old, homeboy Orville Roth will celebrate his 75th birthday on July 3. Big O takes it all in stride though – he once told The Man that he doesn’t understand people that don’t like having birthdays, he says “I want to have as many as I can.”

In this age of fast food, speed dating and instant messaging, it should come as no surprise Pastor Brian Knutson is adding a 30-minute devotional service to the schedule at Immanuel Lutheran Church. Be in your seat at 9:15 a.m. and Bam!, Pastor Brian will have you on your way by 9:45.

Local insurance icon John Webster single handedly rescued three men whose boat capsized on Central Oregon’s East Lake during a recent fishing derby. No word on whether the derby organizers allowed John to count their weight in his totals or if they made him throw them back.

Watch Sunset Magazine for pictures of your poodle or pekinese as the big time magazine sent a photographer to cover this year’s Pet Parade.

Silverton’s mural mogul Vince Till is requesting donations for a new mural featuring Doug Brown, “Silverton’s Champion Bronc and Bull Rider.”  The mural, painted by Roger Cooke, is planned for the wall on the side of the TNT Market and should be done by August. For information, call Vince at 503-873-6572.

Another thing on the long list of things that The Man just doesn’t get is how our government thinks the solution to being broke is to spend inconceivable amounts of money. Anyone who has ever had to cut back to keep their families finances afloat during hard times can tell that these yahoos have no concept of how that works. The Man fears that we may have officially stepped over the crazy line…

Man About Town is a collection of hearsay, rumors and the occasional fact.  If you’ve got a tip, call The Man at 503-845-9499.

A Grin at the End: Life’s pivotal point was 25 years ago

Where were you exactly 25 years ago?
I know where I was. I was quivering at the altar of the Cathedral of the Nativity in Juneau, Alaska. Walking up the aisle toward me was the Most Wonderful Woman in the World, who was about to become Mrs. Sampson.

A Grin at the End: Escape to San Francisco

By Carl Sampson I just got back from a long weekend in San Francisco, a city I hadn’t visited in 29 years — since my wife and I were there on our honeymoon. Oh, I’ve been through the airport a few times and took a quick trip through the west side of the city and over the Golden Gate Bridge, […]
