Farmer’s Market opens

Whether you are looking for beautiful flower bouquets, homemade jams and pastas, a variety of vegetables or fresh fruit, the place to discover the treasures grown or made nearby is the Silverton Farmer’s Market.

The 2016 season begins Saturday, May 7, 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. and continues Saturdays until Oct. 15 at Town Square Park. There will be live music, food, favorite returning vendors along with some new vendors.

Once again, the Farmer’s Market will offer the POP (Power of Produce) Club. This nationally recognized program, started in Oregon City, allows kids aged 5-12 to sign up for a Passport to Health at the market, and receive a reusable shopping bag. Each week of the market, participating kids can come back and receive $2 in tokens to spend on fresh fruits, vegetables, or food plants. The POP Club also provides activities for kids at the market, focusing on healthy choices, plants and growing, and connecting with farms and farmers. The POP Club is free, but the program welcomes donations.

New to the Farmer’s Market is the opportunity for customers to use SNAP/EBT benefits to purchase from market vendors. The Silverton Farmer’s Market can provide this service thanks to a grant from the Farmer’s Market Coalition.
