Man About Town: Warm and fuzzy… It gets me every time

Christmas ManBy Jim Kinghorn

Belgium is already known for horses, waffles and chocolates, but three Silvertonians want to add beer to that list. Local Belgians (well, one out of three isn’t bad), Sheldon Lesire, Eric Druliner and Dale Coleman started a “nano” brewery called Belgian Underground Brewing a while back and need your help to get to the next level.  bit.ly/BUBkick will take you to their Kickstarter page where you can contribute to the cause in return for many enticing rewards including stickers, t-shirts and the sure to be popular, Belgian kisses from men in beards….

If ya’ wanna little validation about why you have chosen this little slice of heaven to call home, go to the Silverton Chamber website and watch the cool new video that local resident Marty Limbird of Ignite Motion Pictures made for town…. www.silvertonchamber.org

Through several locations and a long list of contributing artists, the Lunaria Gallery will spend next year celebrating 20 years of bringing a variety of quality arts to the area. Largely responsible for Silverton’s reputation as an “arts” community, the co–operative gallery will hold several themed events throughout the year to celebrate…. Be sure to stop by, wish them happy anniversary and support your local artists while you’re there….

The Silverton YMCA and Seven Brides Brewing invite you to participate in the second annual Midnight New Year’s Eve Glow Run. The 3K, 5K and 7K runs start promptly at 12:00 a.m. and will provide the added benefit of allowing you to be proud of yourself for fulfilling  your New Year’s resolution to exercise more in 2015…… all by 1:00 a.m.

Rick Heuchert of the Silverton Fire Department asked The Man to remind you that it’s the holidays and that if you don’t water your Christmas tree… They may have to water it for you……

And finally, as the spirit of Christmas draws closer, The Man is reminded of one of my favorite holiday tales. You may have heard it already and like most warm and fuzzy stories, I can’t even vouch for its accuracy. All I know is that it warms my heart (and I hope yours too) every time I read it:

“Orville Smith, a store manager for Best Buy in Augusta, Georgia, told police he observed a male customer, later identified as Tyrone Jackson of Augusta, on surveillance cameras putting a laptop computer under his jacket. When confronted, the man became irate, knocked down an employee, drew a knife and ran for the door. Outside on the sidewalk were four Marines collecting toys for the “Toys for Tots” program. Smith said the Marines stopped the man, but he stabbed one of the Marines, Cpl. Phillip Duggan, in the back; the injury did not appear to be severe. After Police and an ambulance arrived at the scene, Cpl. Duggan was transported for treatment.

“ ‘The suspect was also transported to the local hospital with two broken arms, a broken ankle, a broken leg, several missing teeth, possible broken ribs, multiple contusions, assorted lacerations, a broken nose and a broken jaw… injuries he sustained when he slipped and fell off of the curb after stabbing the Marine’, according to the police report.”

Merry Christmas and Happy New Year from all of us at Our Town!

A word to the wise reader: The Man collects a fair amount of hearsay and rumors and scatters them about as he finds entertaining. If you’re looking for reporting, read the news.

The Old Curmudgeon: Life, tailor-made

By Vern Holmquist Whoah…. Hold on there. I haven’t gone anyplace. I just needed to kick some of the old stuff I have crammed into this small brain of mine, sort of clean it up so that only the good thoughts remain. I think the doctors call it a stroke. The problem is, all those thoughts don’t come back all […]
