Silver Falls School District: Setting a vision – Change ahead

The Silver Falls School District serving Silverton, Scotts Mills, and parts of Mount Angel and Salem, has 13 schools: Bethany Charter, Butte Creek, Central Howell, Eugene Field, Community Roots Montessori Charter, Evergreen, Mark Twain Middle, Pratum, Robert Frost, Scotts Mills, Silver Crest and Victor Point and Silverton High School.

District goals for 2013-14 are:

1. Implement a comprehensive visioning and public input process which produces a document as a basis for district-wide decision making and planning.

2. Complete second year of transition plan to district-wide use of the newly adopted Common Core State Standards.

3. Revise district facility plan with priority emphasis on: technology infrastructure and application upgrades, identification of options regarding use of Eugene Field School, and evaluation of real estate property no longer required for school purposes.

“Patrons are fortunate in our school district to have relative ease of access to school district officials and board members,” Superintendendet Andy Bellando said. “Options include telephone, e-mail, school board meetings, even personal meetings. I have a number of patrons ask to visit with me during the year and can generally grant each request in a timely fashion. Many of our administrators and all of our board members live in one of the district communities. It is very common for patrons to visit with us at community events, even in local businesses such as the grocery store.

“Access is an important priority for the school district, as is the community receiving accurate information. Input by patrons is essential to our operation and in providing the best education possible to our students.

“The school district is very large and culturally diverse. As such it is even more important for us to obtain public input. This district value was reflected in the recent ‘reach out’ in the form of community forums, focus groups and on-line public engagement. We experienced active involvement and look forward to sharing the results with community members once they are available – probably February or March.”
