The Old Curmudgeon: Season of celebration

The Old CurmudgeonBy Vern Holmquist

Baby, it was cold Friday night, but it was Frist Friday and not cold enough to keep people from going downtown to taste, to see, and to listen to the music – and to see Santa Claus light up Silverton’s Christmas tree, a wonderful and hospitable way for our merchants to show us what they offer to brighten the holiday season. Every venue participating drew a crowd. It was good to see the Wolf building all lit up and doing business, even if it was only for two days.

And then came Saturday night and the wonderful Purple Ball at the Silverton Elks Lodge. The dining and dancing areas were beautifully decorated and lighted, the food fantastic, and the young ladies of the Silverton High FBLA did a good job of seeing a near-capacity attendence was nicely served.

A local band under the name “Not Responsible” sounded great and should change its name after this enjoyable gig. Even a hat check stand staffed by attractive ladies took the hassle out of what to do with our heavy coats. The Elks didn’t miss a trick making this a most enjoyable party. All this was done under the watchful eye of Dan Buckholz, the current Leading Knight, and his wife Cheryl, and the hard-working crew whose names I will try to remember: Don and Sandi Nelson, Jody and Dan Grilli, Bridgett and Larry Crivella and Paul and Laura Anderson. Also of note was the attendence of Exalted Ruler Darrel Brown and two Past Exalted Rulers, all proud of this very successful evening.

Many thanks for a most enjoyable evening and thanks to the Benevolent and Protective Order of Elks for being aware that there are still some hungry mouths in our bountiful area.  The Purple Ball is an annual fundraiser for a charity.

I wish you a Merry Christmas, I wish you a Merry Christmas, I wish ou a Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year!

Bird is the Word: Happy at home

By Kali Ramey Martin I’ve learned a lot about myself in the last few years. I learned how to hold my own in the harsh, fast-paced, cutthroat environment of a fine-dining restaurant kitchen.
