Man About Town: Take it easy – You’ve got more time

By Jim Kinghorn

Join The Man in wishing Rick Lewis a happy retirement. After 14 years as the Silverton Police Chief (certainly not a popularity contest), Rick plans to spend more time fly fishing… It seems to me that fishing for fish would be easier and it must be hard to get the hook out of their little fly mouths… but good luck with that anyway, Chief, we’ll miss you…

Vic GilliamNicole Kay recently mentioned to The Man that she had not seen her neighbor State Rep. Vic Gilliam for a while…. I think we figured out why at a recent First Friday…. Hey, times are tough and the guy has to make a living somehow…

With the re-opening of the Palace Theater still over a month away, you can get your flick fix up at the Oregon Garden. Speaking of entertainment, join music groupies from all across the west at the Mount Angel Abbey’s annual Bach Festival,  July 25 – 27. The three-day celebration of all things Johan Sebastian includes recitals, unique supper basket picnics on the hilltop lawn and the main concert that starts each night at 8 p.m. Get your tickets online now at: mountangelabbey.org/bach-tickets.htm and get your gemutlichkeit groove on…

The Man and the PirateOn a recent trip to the coast, The Man-ette and I took a side trip to see the beached dock that was traced back to a town in Japan hard hit by the Tsunami. On one hand it’s just a big chunk of hollow concrete, not much to look at. On the other hand, The Man was left to wonder what stories it had to tell about the carnage and loss of life it had seen… As I pondered such deep thoughts a real life pirate climbed up on top of the dock, gave me a hug and claimed the “vessel” for his new ship… I hear some people say we need to keep Oregon weird… I think it pretty much stays that way all by itself…

Hey, now that I think about it, that pirate kinda looks like Vic Gilliam too……..hmmmm….

Well, summer is finally here, the weather is getting warm, and it’s time to make big plans for your well-earned long weekend coming up. It turns out that the earth’s rotation is slowing down slightly so the atomic clock needs to be reset to add one extra second so, whoohoo, you just got more free time! What will you do with your extra second? Drive 88 feet? Read six words of your favorite book? Or how ‘bout diving into a swimming pool (just the in the air part, not actually hitting the water)…. Me, I think I’ll just sleep in…

See you on the street…

A Grin at the End: Spur of the moment stories

Our kids are real road warriors. When they were younger, we took a lot of cross-country trips. We drove from Minnesota to Boston to Los Angeles and back — by way of Florida.
