Man About Town: Uhhh, what?! Blah, blah, blah… dog park?!?

By Jim Kinghorn

Despite the recent talk of bankers as greedy so and sos, Citizens Bank is encouraging its tellers to knit on the job. Whenever they are not with a customer, you can find them knitting hats and scarves to be donated to Silverton Area Community Aid.

If you see Terry Caster around town, tell him how great the Odd Fellows building at First and Main looks with the new coat of paint. The green on the First Street side looks amazing and it is a huge upgrade for the landmark corner.

Jason Freilinger has his new Radio Shack store on track for a Nov. 5 grand opening in the aforementioned building and former Friendly Florist Joyce Church continues to get her florist/coffee shop ready to open down the block. When was the last time Main Street between Water and First had an open business in every building???

From the land of the green bow tie comes word that Orville Roth’s Environmental Education Program at The Oregon Garden has served its 50,000 area fifth-grader. Think about that, Roth’s is a grocery store – they sell food. They don’t need to do this but it’s one of many examples of how they give back to the community. It makes those who tried to disparage Roth’s for owning a building that houses a business that received incentive money look a little silly…

Mount Angel knows 2010 Junior First Citizen Angel Cardenas is a great kid. He’s so great, in fact, Univision Network will feature this fine young man on its show, Despierta America airing 7-10:30 a.m. on Oct. 19.
Speaking of great kids, congratulations are in order for Dixon Bledsoe who was recently chosen Realtor of the Year by the North Willamette Association of Realtors.

The Oregon Garden Resort has welcomed over 100,000 guests since opening in 2008. That’s quite a milestone for the property that was a huge risk for Dirk Winter and Moonstone Properties. Hmmmm, the Resort has received money from the city’s TOT funds – I wonder if the same people will complain about that and look even sillier that they did three items ago…

Slow progress continues on plans for a dog park in Silverton. The months of meetings, open houses, howls and yowls and generally divisive behavior between the cats and dogs have impeded the process. Some of the detractors (mostly cats) worry that creating the space will only attract canine idlers and vagabonds, plying their poop and turn the area into a wasteland. The issue threatens to pit Retrievers and Pomeranians  against Rottweilers and Poodles, leading to an inevitable recall attempt. Getting the all-important canine demographic opinion thru surveys has been unsuccessful due to the unfortunate lack of thumbs, making holding a pencil virtually impossible… When asked her opinion, The Pup perked up her ears, tilted her head slightly to the side and gave that look that can only be taken to mean “Oh, you poor dumb human, I have no idea what you are even saying.”

See you on the streets….

The Forum: Money should be spent better

I recently read the article in the March Our Town, “Fighting the Facility.” Obviously there are some problems at Eugene Field Elementary School that need to be addressed. I foresee a bond request in the near future.

Music, muscle and milk: Do-gooders deserve a special shout-out

It is so easy to talk about the multitude of things going awry in the world, and then have to suffer the “slings and arrows of outrageous” barbs for offering a viewpoint counter to those who lie in wait for the attack, like a cheetah stalking the herd’s wounded or youngest gazelle. That being said, I told my daughter that […]

Penny’s journey – After nine years (nine lives?) cat returned home

By Melissa Wagoner Bobbie the Wonder Dog may have met his match in the form of Penny, Pratum Elementary School’s Christmas cat. “[Y]ou just can’t make this stuff up,” Pratum Elementary School teacher Lisa Freauff said of the story, which began during the Christmas break of 2021 when she heard a cat “yelling” from the empty school’s supply room. “That’s really the […]
