Legal matters: Trial set for hit-and-run death of teenager

A March trial has been set for a Silverton man accused of killing a Keizer teenager after an alleged hit-and-run collision in May.

Gustavo Sosa, 27, is scheduled for a four-day trial beginning March 12, 2024, in Marion County Circuit Court on charges including first-degree manslaughter for the death of Victor Andre Cortez-Andrade, 16.

Sosa allegedly rear-ended a vehicle occupied by Cortez-Andrade May 21 in Salem at the intersection of Lancaster Drive and Beverly Avenue NE. Cortez-Andrade was hospitalized with life-threatening injuries and died May 23.

Sosa allegedly fled the scene, then turned himself in on May 22. He remains held without bail in the Marion County Jail.

If convicted, Sosa faces at least 10 years in prison. Prosecutors are seeking additional prison time, claiming Sosa has shown no remorse and that past convictions for DUII and violent crimes have not changed his behavior.
