MCSO Lt. Hunter chosen to succeed Kast

Marion County Commissioners have selected Marion County Sheriff’s Office Lt. Nicholas Hunter to succeed outgoing Sheriff Joe Kast, who retires June 30.

Hunter was chosen Wednesday, June 7, after commissioners interviewed six applicants from local law enforcement agencies.

Commissioners expect to make an official appointment June 26. A swearing in ceremony is scheduled for June 30 and the public is invited to attend.

In a news release June 7, Commissioner Colm Willis said Hunter was chosen for his experience in law enforcement and “willingness to serve our community.”

“We look forward to working with him to protect our community and ensure Marion County continues to be a wonderful place to live, work, and raise a family,” said Willis.

Commissioner Kevin Cameron said he believes Hunter will help the sheriff’s office transition well after Kast’s retirement, and his desire to adapt to the changing needs of law enforcement. Commissioner Danielle Bethell said she was impressed by Hunter’s willingness to understand a problem before seeking a solution and plans to hold Hunter to this.

Kast announced his retirement May 4 after 31 years in law enforcement, including four as sheriff.
