Winner shares the wealth

Silverton resident Darla McVay could have taken her winnings and run. Instead, she decided to use her good fortune to help those less fortunate.

McVay won Silver Falls Soccer Club’s drawing for a shopping spree at Roth’s Grocery Store. She got the opportunity to fill a grocery cart with $500 in food.

“When I found out I had won the shopping spree, I immediately thought I would help Silverton Area Community Aid,” McVay said. “We are really blessed and we don’t need the groceries.”

SACA provides emergency food and financial assistance to families in need within the Silver Falls School District.

On June 5 before fans and family, McVay had three minutes to dash around Roth’s collecting food for SACA.

Having done her homework, McVay had a list of most needed items, including eggs, cheese, flour, sugar, coffee, juice, chili, baking items and dinner mixes.

After rushing around the store, McVay’s grand total for groceries was $378, equaling 321 pounds – then she wrote a check for $125 to SACA to use for emergency aid assistance or to purchase more food.

Dean Oster of the Silver Falls Soccer Club said 700 tickets were sold for $5 each.
