SHS FFA competes at national agronomy event in Indianapolis

Using scientific principles and investigative skills, members of the Silverton FFA Chapter competed at the National FFA agronomy career development event during the 82nd National FFA Convention in Indianapolis, Ind., Oct. 21–24.

Team members were Riane Towery, Kelsey Potter, Colby Qualey and Megan Schmaltz. Their advisors are Johnie Ferro and Scott Towery.

In the national event, FFA members explored scientific principles and applied various crop management practices through several hands-on activities. These activities included developing solutions for crop production problems and identifying seeds, insects, soil and crops. The team earned a Silver award and placed 18th in the nation.

Sponsored by Bayer Crop Science as a special project of the National FFA Foundation, the agronomy event is one of 24 events at the national level. Career development events use real-life activities to reinforce lessons taught in the classroom. The activities are one of the ways FFA prepares student members for career success.

The National FFA Organization, formerly known as the Future Farmers of America, is a national youth organization of 507,763 student members – all preparing for leadership and careers in the science, business and technology of agriculture.
