Three local women are helping their neighbors save money by sharing resources and exchanging items they no longer need. What makes their task unusual is the method by which they carry it out. Barbara Parras, Amber Pierce and Marilyn Brenden are dedicated to helping others survive tough times. All three happened to belong to the same Yahoo! groups in the Willamette Valley area when they decided to start their own in Silverton: SilvertonOrRecycle, now called SilvertonOrRecycleAndResources.

Protesters protested: Citizens turn out to counter anti-gay group’s message

Four protesters from an anti-gay Kansas church were outflanked by more than 100 picketing in support of Silverton mayor-elect Stu Rasmussen.

The protesters from Westboro Baptist Church, an independent church not affiliated with any know Baptist conventions or associations, gathered in front of Silverton City Hall on Monday, Nov. 24. They carried professionally made signs that condemned Rasmussen’s openly-transgender identity.

Church of Nazarene: Celebrating a trio of anniversaries

Last month, Silverton Church of the Nazarene celebrated three major anniversaries: the denomination’s 100th, the church’s 35th and the pastor’s 10th. On Oct. 5, the Silverton church joined with 18,000 other Nazarene churches in 151 world areas to commemorate the founding of the Church of the Nazarene.

“After she suffered the loss of her son, Susan Horn turned her own grief around by helping others resolve theirs.

“When I lost my baby, I found myself searching for answers and information,” said Horn, who lives in the country between Lyons and Mill City with her husband, John, and daughters, Sarah, 5, Ellen, 3, and Anna, 10 months, born after the August 2006 miscarriage of baby Max.

Rep. Vic Gilliam refutes residency challenge

A blog entry on the Northwest Republican blogspot has rekindled interest in whether Rep. Vic Gilliam (R-Silverton) fulfills residency requirements to represent the area in the Oregon State Legislature.

“I heard that Vic Gilliam actually lives in Seattle, but only owns a house in Silverton …,” the blogger, signed in as Steve, commented.

Grand Jury unanimously concludes police shooting justified

A Marion County grand jury deliberated one day before clearing Silverton police officer Tony Gonzalez of any wrongdoing in the fatal June 30 shooting of Irish national Andrew James Hanlon, 20.

“They were in session until just past 5 sometime last night,” Deputy District Attorney Don Abar said July 25, the day after the Marion County District Attorney’s office released information to the press regarding the grand jury’s decision.

With gas topping $4 a gallon, the area bus system known as CARTS is greeting new riders.
