Friends of Silver Falls: Volunteers staff shop, tend park and events

By Mary OwenSouth Falls Nature Store, run by Friends of Silver Falls, quadrupled in size when it moved to a new location. Volunteers with the organization take part in many of the State Park’s activities.

Last September, Silverton store owner Tricia Sorgen closed Silver Creek Statuary and became administrator of the Friends of Silver Falls. It’s a role she relishes, she said.

“Over the years I have worked and volunteered for various non-profit organizations and have found these groups to consist of very dedicated and enthusiastic people,” Sorgen said. “It was easy to envision myself working with individuals who are true advocates for the natural and cultural resources of Silver Falls State Park. And there are few places to work that are more beautiful!”

Friends of Silver Falls, established in 1986, runs South Falls Nature Store to raise funds to accomplish its mission: to promote, educated, preserve and protect Silver Falls State Park. The group is one of 16 serving at Oregon state parks.

“Last July, the store’s size was quadrupled when it moved into the historic log cabin just past the lodge,” Sorgen said. “In recognition of this, we are currently re-evaluating and selecting inventory that more closely reflects the interpretive and education aspects of the park. My goal is to provide unique books, toys and consignment items to our visitors so they will long remember their trip to Silver Falls.”

The success of the nature store relies heavily on the volunteers who run it, Sorgen said.

“Volunteers staff the store in the winter from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m., and during the remainder of the year, we’re open 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. seven days a week,” she said.

“With the busy months coming soon, the Friends are looking for enthusiastic people who are interested in working in a beautiful, natural environment where they can meet people from around the world, answer questions and make sales.” Volunteers commit either a half or full day once a week, she said.

“But if your interest lies in crafts, landscaping, special events or nature walks, call the office to learn more about how you can make a difference,” she suggested.

Working at Silver Falls State Park is rewarding, said Andy Nelson, who volunteers with his wife, Louise.

“What I really enjoy about volunteering in the store are the people,” he said. “They are having a fun time at the park, and I can add to that.”

Friends of Silver Falls volunteers also participate in at least four social gatherings a year and receive rewards and recognition for their work. They’re easy to spot, Nelson said, clad in a distinctive blue vest while working at the store or in the park.

“We’re all fortunate to live so close to Oregon’s largest state park,” Sorgen said. “The Friends have opportunities for everyone to become involved, and to help motivate others to experience the beauty of Silver Falls State Park.”

Silver Falls Nature Store: Log cabin setting attracts customers

You’ve heard of “new and improved?” It’s an apt description for the Nature Store at Silver Falls State Park. For years the store was hidden away inside South Lodge in a dark, somewhat gloomy, corner room near the café. But that’s all changed.
