Man About Town: Those pesky promises

The ManBy Jim Kinghorn

Planning for the 2009 Silverton Wine and Jazz Festival has begun. To get in on the fun, meetings are at 7 p.m. the third Monday of the month at Silver Creek Coffee Shop.

Mark your calendar for Mt. Angel’s third annual Kriskindlmarkt. The Dec. 6 holiday market will feature arts and crafts, food, music, street carolers and the tree lighting. There will be an appearance by some guy named Kris Kringle (The Man is not sure but I think he may be a rapper…)

Also in the planning stages is the Mt. Angel WurstFest. The inaugural sausage festival will be in February and will showcase the best of the wurst…. or is that the wurst of the best? The event will be in the biergarten which is the wurst location in town and The Man bets that the music will be some of the wurst you’ve ever heard…

The Man is sad to report Mildred Petersen passed away last month at the age of 96. Long a member of the “counter culture” at the Towne House, Mildred would almost daily take her place at the end of the counter, dressed to the nines with impeccable hair and makeup and enjoy breakfast with her friends. She will be missed.

Join the Silverton Hospital Network in welcoming Tony Dworak to Silverton. Tony will replace Don Russo as development director for the hospital foundation and comes to us from Columbus, Neb.

Darrel Matthews has opened Bangs and Burns hair salon at 207 N. First St., in Silverton. Watch for the Black Friday Sale and get some great deals on Redken and American Crew hair care products.

OK kids, apparently many of you have been confused by the new traffic lights at C and First streets. (Does I look like a traffic engineer? No, but I am, after all, The Man so here goes) When you approach from the north the lights show two arrows, both pointing right. If you wait for an arrow pointing left, plan on being there a while. “Oh, Mister Man, I am so confused, what am I to do if I am wanting to turn left?”  The answer, my poor misguided friend (no, it’s not blowing in the wind) is that you can no longer legally turn left onto C Street. If you want to go over to Second Street you have to turn left a block earlier at D Street…..

Me and Double D show up at the White House... Whadda Ya mean we can\'t come in?!? Didn\'t we win?!?!Hey, what the heck happened?!!? One minute The Man and Dennis the Builder (Downey) have our bags packed for our four-year frat party in the White House and the next minute we hear that some guy named Ba-rak O-bama (yeah, we had never heard of him either) narrowly beat us out for the chance to be the leaders of the free world. Oh well, it’s probably better this way – there were all those pesky campaign promises we made – good thing we won’t have to actually do any of that stuff. In fact, The Man is pretty sure that O-bama feller woke-up in a cold sweat on Nov. 5 wondering what made this sound like a good idea.

A Grin at the End: Escape to San Francisco

By Carl Sampson I just got back from a long weekend in San Francisco, a city I hadn’t visited in 29 years — since my wife and I were there on our honeymoon. Oh, I’ve been through the airport a few times and took a quick trip through the west side of the city and over the Golden Gate Bridge, […]

The Old Curmudgeon: It’s not the gift – but the fact I thought of it

It’s just a few days away from goody goody gift time. The Old Curmudgeon has a little different take on gift giving in that I really don’t give a darn what the gift receiver wants, nor do I worry whether it is the right size or color, neither am I concerned if they already have one and I’m certainly not worried about them wanting something else.

A Grin at the End: Faster, higher, stronger – Oregon style

The Olympics have been over for some time now, but I’m not over the Olympics. The thrill of victory – and the agony of defeat – played out on an international stage is the best way I know to recognize our commonality. We are, after all, passengers on a single lonely planet amid billions of galaxies. To keep that spirit […]
