The ManAnd the hits just keep on coming … The Silverton Hospital Auxiliary was recently selected as winner of the 2008 Oregon Governor’s Volunteer Award … The Man wonders if there are any awards left that these guys haven’t won???

Well, it’s mid-September and the taps have been closed, the crowds have gone home, the food booths have gone back to wherever they go back to and the sounds of polka music have played their last Oom-Pah. Every year The Man is amazed how this classic Northwest festival seemingly appears, entertains hordes of visitors and then disappears with the precision of a well-oiled military operation. It goes so smoothly, in fact, that it is easy to take for granted the countless hours of planning and preparation that goes into this huge event. The Man salutes you, Oktoberfest board for another job well done!

Cue the music, wake the kids, it’s time for another round of The Man’s “Business Musical Chairs”! “Let’s get right to the bonus round,” … Longtime pizza pros, Joe and Kathy Ross have sold their Figaro’s franchise to Dan and Renee Nichols who used to have a Figaro’s in Eugene. Doug and Elaine DeGeorge of Carmel, Calif., have opened Bella’s Restaurant where Fratello’s used to be and Craig Gereau has closed The Red Thai Room and hopes to move it to, you guessed it, Carmel, Calif. The American Academy of Performing Arts has danced on down the block to a new spot above El Toro. Mike and Debbie Wellman are renovating the former Bubbles & Bows location after the dog grooming business moved from First Street to Silverton Road next to Silver Creek Animal Clinic. The Wellmans’ remodeled space will house Mike’s architectural business and current tenant, Dennis Downey Construction. Countryman Public House has been sold to the Haslebacher family and will re-open as The Mill St. Bar and Grill. In Mt Angel, Spoleto’s Pizza that previously moved from the corner to the middle of the block, has moved back to the corner of Charles and Garfield … “tell them what they’ve won, Don Pardo.”

No lipstick on these pigs! No, it\'s not ZZTop, just your best choice. Vote early and often...With the election all but won – me and Double D, Dennis Downey – it is time to announce our choice for press secretary. The obvious choice is the man of few words, Keith Kaser. The job shouldn’t be too hard, as our administration doesn’t plan on telling you very much about what we are up to. Standard responses will be along the lines of “I don’t know, let me get back to you on that” (which means yeah, right, don’t hold your breath) or “I could tell you but of course then I would have to kill you.” “Our policy will be that you are all on a need-to-know basis – when you need to know, we might tell you. Trust us, it’s better that way.”

A Grin at the End: Avoid being on naughty list

By Carl Sampson The winter holidays means the invitations will be arriving for parties, get-togethers, reunions and parole hearings. With the exception of the latter, most gatherings are fun. It’s always a kick to get together with family, friends, co-workers – anyone – to celebrate. I can think of no better way of doing that than enjoying good food and […]
