The Old Curmudgeon: Making the most … of the choices

The Old CurmudgeonBy Vern Holmquist

Last First Friday I joined with friends to listen to the music of the A-H Factor band at the Old Stone Coffee House in Mount Angel, a very charming shop serving the tastiest coffee and showing interesting collectibles. Stephanie August and Mike Husser are very professional entertainers who recently left Southern California for an easier life style in God’s Country, now Silverton residents. Thanks to Old Stone proprietors Cheryl and Wendy for bringing First Friday promotions to Mount Angel. They may take a little while to catch on but are worth the effort.

There is a new, interesting shop in Silverton named Cadence which specializes in vintage clothing for ladies. Its appeal is quite evident. It allows us to relive a time when lives were not so fast and furious, a more gracious and elegant era, a time when we took a little more time to smell the roses. With all of our high tech we have lost a lot of living. It may be a good time to look back. Thanks to Rachel Fox for giving us this chance. You can find Cadence in the Hartman Building, 214 S. Water St.

I listen to a lot of music and sometimes a tune really hits home. “Old Rockin’ Chair’s Got Me, Cane By My Side” Hoagy, you’re getting to me. I’m beginning to feel like an old man. It’s getting more difficult for me to leave my favorite chair. I sometimes joke about not recommending old age to anyone, but then I remember the alternative is not a good choice either. I’d rather smell the roses than push up the daisies. I guess what I am trying to say is don’t expect my column on too regular a basis. And you, too, take some time to smell the roses. Someday you may wish you did.

Well, we are into another year and let’s pray it is a year when world powers come to their senses and push away their hatred toward the other. Wars have produced nothing but more wars. There seems to be more discontent in the world now than at any time I can remember. I believe it is all driven by greed and envy, with a little salvation thrown in. We all need a HAPPY NEW YEAR!
