The Man About Town: Are those your legs… or are you riding a chicken?

By Jim Kinghorn

Now that the spectacular fields of tulips out at Wooden Shoe have faded it’s time for a visit to the Oregon Garden, Silver Falls or to take the short drive to Schreiner’s for irises and Adelman’s for peonies. Even if you’re not a plant person, a visit to these places will give you an appreciation for the endless beauty of nature. We get to live in a truly unique corner of the planet – get out there and enjoy it!

Silverton’s Daniel Côté has been named as one of only 72 directors of the National Board of Chiropractors. The Man sez that although this will be a new role for Daniel, he hopes the “adjustment” will not be too painful….

For over a month now, workers have been digging in the field just south of Mount Angel. They first dug a couple of big holes, then they seemed to be sifting dirt in seemingly random places on both sides of the highway….are they…
A) Looking for the lost recipes  for Monastery Mustard;
B) Trying to find Jerry Lauzon’s car keys;
C) Searching for a new city manager?
D) Digging for the legendary but elusive “Gooleysaurus?”
E) all of the above….

Speaking of mysteries…. Marion County recently decided to put up one of those green tourism signs on Highway 214 and Hook Road directing folks to “Cline Br.” two miles to the west…. The Man assumes that Br. is short for bridge but can’t find anyone who has heard of or knows where it is…. but apparently in their infinite wisdom, it is seen as one of the area’s major attractions…….

Calling Gus Fredrick(sons)…. the Dutch organization, Mars One is looking for applicants to go to start a colony on the Red Planet. The successful applicant must be resilient, adaptable, resourceful, must work well within a team and the entire project will be televise…. there is only one itty bitty, little, tiny, minor hitch… the trip is one way. You see researchers figure that after spending seven to eight months in a low gravity environment, the loss of bone and muscle mass would be so great as to render one a stumbling mess devoid of basic motor skills….. something a guy might be accustomed to after a night at Seven Brides…. making Gus perfect for the job….

Stacy (one of those) Palmer(s) of the Chamber is proud to report that PGE will install a couple of car charging stations later this summer by Roth’s for your electric jitney. Stacy says that should really save the wear and tear on that extension cord you’ve been using….

An addendum to last month’s addendum of additional, possible, could be, new business openings in Silverton: P’etcetera pet boutique will soon open on First Street where Kayla Designs was…. Boy, I sure hope they have a saddle for my chicken…..

With all the interest in backyard chickens in these parts the last couple of years it shouldn’t surprise that in the true spirit of American entrepreneurship there is a business out there online that is ready to accommodate your needs. “Promoting the fashionable backyard chicken” is the goal of Pampered Poultry whose main product is, you guessed it, chicken diapers. These clucker coverups are guaranteed to avoid messes in your house or car and keep your chick “stylish and comfortable” as well. Also available are all manner of chicken attire and, you guessed it again, chicken saddles…..and of course, you guessed it for the third time to prove there is no end to what we will watch, a reality show is in the works….

See you on the street….

Old Glory and more: Time to celebrate the spirit of America

July is the time of year when a lot of people do a lot of flag-waving, and I’m one of them. But there’s more to America than Old Glory. Much more. I just turned 64 – I know, I don’t look a day over 63 – and I’ve seen a lot of this country. I’ve lived on the East Coast, […]

The Old Curmudgeon: Signs of fall – Reasons to celebrate

By Vern Holmquist What a great summer we have had. Now the signs of fall are upon us. The flowers are retreating and the leaves are falling. School has started with its flurry of activities and homework. Nights are cooler, yet the days are still warm, well, at least when the sun comes shining through. And days are growing shorter, […]
