Letter to the Editor: Thankful for Mount Angel

It is like living in the town of Mayberry!

I am deeply grateful to the administrators, alumni, parents, students and staff of Kennedy High School for my two surprise birthday parties in Mount Angel! They were truly memorable.

Indeed, I am fortunate to be a longtime member of Mount Angel School District. It is a pleasure to showcase the academic, athletic and community-service achievements of local students in our vibrant village.

Particularly, I wish to thank Paula Mabry of Mt. Angel Publishing Co. for her delightful, professional cooperation in enabling me to provide school news coverage via our fine local news publications during the past decade. Mount Angel is fortunate to have such high-caliber news services.

The recent surprise parties in my behalf were awesome. I offer my special thanks to Kennedy High student body president Hannah Kloft and her “sneaky crew” of diligent student workers who secretly planned and produced a very memorable day for me to enjoy. Her fine video presentation, the beautiful cake from the student body, and the many gifts and cards from the kind Kennedy students were priceless memories.

Thanks also to members of the community for your kindnesses in creating the most unique and impressive birthday of my life.

And, I wish to express my special gratitude to Dave and Nancy Bochsler plus Randy and Lynnette Traeger for their delightful surprise-dinner at The Glockenspiel…which occurred in-between the two surprise-parties! Thanks also to Reagan and Robert Purdy for hosting the second party at Tiny’s for Kennedy parents and alumni.

Yes, Mount Angel…it’s like living in Mayberry!

By Vern Holmquist I have been watching with great interest the worldwide trend toward smaller, even micro housing. And I agree with those who say we should be considering taking up less space on our planet. With this in mind, I have studied all the floor plans I could find. Having lived many years in the somewhat confined space of […]

A Grin at the End: Faster, higher, stronger – Oregon style

The Olympics have been over for some time now, but I’m not over the Olympics. The thrill of victory – and the agony of defeat – played out on an international stage is the best way I know to recognize our commonality. We are, after all, passengers on a single lonely planet amid billions of galaxies. To keep that spirit […]
