The Old Curmudgeon: Campaigning to move the undecided to the best of the wurst

By Vern Holmquist

This article is for the undecided. No, not undecided about the Republican candidate for president but for those of you who are undecided about attending Wurstfest on Feb. 17 and 18 in Mount Angel.

After attending for the last three years I feel qualified to state no way can you see more stout-hearted people with big smiles truly enjoying themselves than at this gathering of good friends and neighbors.

I can talk about the great entertainment, the food, the interesting craft booths and, of course, those good German beverages and the best of the Wurst, the band, the dancers but the real treat is seeing the happy faces, people having home town fun. Of course having the event in the new Community Building ain’t too shabby.

One of my best Wurstfest memories is that of the Do Re Me Dancers, they tugged at my heart and I wanted to hug every one of them. Thanks, Nan.

Meanwhile, back at the ranch I have been spending countless hours watching the Republican primaries almost as if they have their own version of worstfest .Iit is like the event is to prove which of the candidates is the worst: name calling, lying about their records and the records of their opponents, bragging about their experience. It’s the worst I have heard my 90 years.

I love it though because it brings out the candidate’s true character. One candidate has been married three times to the others’ once. Well, there you go. It’s easy to see which has had the most experience.

Odd, but why do I feel at this point the two leading Republican candidates are on the president’s team? I guess I just listen too closely.
