Man About Town: Bacon, bacon. . . lt’s Baccoonn!

By Jim Kinghorn

Like the swallows of Capistrano, those plumage professionals at Bangs and Burns have continued on their journey southward. Starting out in a shop on North First Street, then on Main Street, off South Water Street and now on Sooouth Water, next to Water Mountains Restaurant. If this trend continues you’re eventually gonna need a state park pass to get a haircut…

The Silverton Country Hysterical… oops, I mean Historical Society is sportin’ some new signage, landscaping and paint to welcome residents and tourists alike to come see their slice of Silverton history. Short of funds, they earned the improvements the old fashioned way, with a Dime Toss booth at Homer Days. The museum is at 428 S. Water St., open weekends from 1-4 p.m. and by appointment.

It will soon be easier to have your daily bread as Keith Zinn is opening his second The Bread Board Artesian Bakery location in the historic gas station at 206 S. Water St. The Falls City based bakery has been a popular attraction at the Silverton Farmers’ Market. Twyla Blatchford has opened Leona’s Bakery & Café in the former Mount Angel location of the Angel’s Table. They serve breakfast, lunch and “a variety of tasty bakery items.” Join The Man in wishing them great success and here’s hoping they both make a lot of dough………

There’s a new king of Bavaria… Chris Bischoff was recently chosen as the president of the Mount Angel Oktoberfest. Chris has been an Oktoberfest board member for 11 years so don’t plan on big changes, just “Come Join in the Harvest Dance.”

Have you been pulled over by one of the new Silverton Police cars? (me neither, but it’s not for the lack of tryin’)… The shiny new Dodge Chargers have light bars so bright that even Don Pettit can see that you may be headed for the hoosegow. Kinda reminds The Man of those days under the bright lights of the disco era… Although I don’t think trying to impress the officer with your moves to “Shake your Groove Thing” will help your situation much….

If you’re stumbling out of Mac’s on March 2, don’t be alarmed if on you see Llamas in Red Pajamas, Cats in Hats or Turtles named Yertle (I know some of you see them all the time….). It’s just Silverton Together celebrating the birthday of Dr. Seuss on “Read Across America Day.”  This nationwide event promotes literacy for children, teens, and you too, Horton. Call Doreen Kelly at 503-873-0405 if you’d like to help out.

The Man’s quote of the month also draws on the wisdom of Dr. Seuss: “You have brains in your head and feet in your shoes. You can steer yourself in any direction you choose. You’re on your own. And you know what you know. And YOU are the one who’ll decide which way you will go.”

The Man has a long held belief that any food can be made better by adding peanuts and/or bacon so imagine my delight to find there is a fast food joint that is offering a bacon milkshake. Even better is the fact that it includes 1,081 energy-producing calories, 37 grams of wrinkle stretching fat and 108 grams of stimulating sugar. See, it’s good for you… and it tastes like bacon. Life just got a little better….

See you on the street….
