Man About Town: Wanna buy a bridge?… over troubled waters

The leaves are falling, the days are shorter and Christmas will be here before you know it – time for The Man’s incredibly brief business briefs… Towne House owners Kelly Miller and Rick Rolie are happy to announce that even though their restaurant managers didn’t work out, they will be keeping the bar open seven days a week with a tasty new menu…Northwest Coin Gallery & Precious Metals has opened at 103 S. Water St…..The Game X–Change on First Street has new owners and will change to Video Game Wizards…. Joyce Church has the dynamic duo of Stone Creek Café and Branches & Bloom flower shop ready to open on Main Street…. Jason Freilinger has his shiny new Radio Shack fully stocked with all manor of electronic gizmos, office supplies and toys…..and don’t forget all of the other great shops, antique stores and restaurants that make it easy to “Choose Silverton” this season.

Speaking of shopping local, don’t forget the annual Silverton Shop Hop, Nov. 25 to Dec. 13. Look for your passport in this edition of this “rag” or at the 27 participating businesses in the area.

Congratulations are in order to the Kennedy High School Girls Cross Country Team that took third place in the state after winning the district championship. Legendary coach Steve Ritchie promises to not lose the keys to the team bus next time – apparently it was a long run home…..

Genie Stoll reports the Angel of Hope has landed next to The Oregon Garden and the surrounding landscaping is coming along nicely. The Angel provides a place of quiet reflection for anyone who has suffered the loss of a child. The public is invited to join the candlelighting ceremony Dec. 1, 6-8 p.m.

Cynthia Unger has opened St. Nicholas Bake Shop on Charles Street in Mount Angel….rumor has it that another bakery may also open soon in the “Village of the Bells…er…Bakeries.”

Get ready for the second annual Men’s Night Out at Seven Brides Brewing on Dec. 7. The event will feature more than 20 vendors and the opportunity to shop for all of the women in your life. There will also be ample time with your buddies to discuss issues like “matching your belt to your logging boots, the advantages of silk vs. chiffon and of course asking “do these Carhartt’s make my butt look big?” (Yes, they do). Oh yeah, there will probably be beer or something available, too….

You can once again feel free to move about the country(side). The Gallon House bridge is back open after a summer of repairs, the road closing washout on Nusom Road is finally fixed and new signage and paving provides for a smooth trip up the Abbey Road (koo koo kachoo).

Soooo let us get this straight… after three months of draggin’ the town through the muck of this Silverton city councilor recall fiasco, it is claimed that even though more than enough signatures have been gathered, no petitions are filed ‘cause it might be harmful to the community? Uhhhh huh… and I’ve got a Gallon House Bridge (newly refurbished!) to sell ‘ya….

Art Festival features lots of hands-on opportunities

When John Labovitz was asked to create the poster for the eighth annual Silverton Fine Arts Festival, the local photographer envisioned taking photographs of local artists working in their medium.

“We are known as an arts town and even though we have a great selection of local and regional artists, I thought about highlighting some of our local artists,” Labovitz said.
