Architect Frank Lloyd Wright was a “foodie” say organizers of a fundraiser benefiting the Gordon House – the only Wright-designed building open to the public in the Pacific Northwest. The event’s planners point to Wright’s innovations for a small but functional kitchen he designed to be efficient, convenient and inspirational for food preparation.

Wright designed the home for Conrad and Evelyn Gordon, who built the house on their Clackamas County farm in 1964. To raise funds to maintain the Gordon House, now located next to The Oregon Garden in Silverton, there will be an evening of food and wine, a silent auction and a drawing with a “wine wall.”

Evelyn Gordon entertained many Frank Lloyd Wright aficionados in the home during the three decades she lived there. When she died in 1997 the house and remaining farm acreage were put up for sale. When it sold in 2000, preservationists and architecture fans were not happy to learn that the new owners planned to demolish Oregon’s only Wright-designed building.

After concerted efforts, the house was moved 24 miles to Silverton in 2001. It was carefully reconstructed and opened to the public the following year.

The Gordon House was meant to be a demonstration of innovations for affordable houses for people of moderate means. In 2004, it was listed on the National Register of Historic Places and restoration and preservation work continues.

The fundraiser is sponsored by BASCO, InnerCity Properties, Mount Jefferson Farms, and National Kitchen & Bath Association. It will be held at BASCO Showroom in Portland. Evening includes food and wine served in BASCO’s kitchen technology showrooms by Northwest chefs and representatives of Oregon wineries and breweries.
