Something for the Soul: Talking with God – Conversation begins with introspection, ends with insight

By Winnie BoltonWinnie Bolton

My monthly columns fall under the heading “Something for the Soul,” which I take pretty seriously but hopefully not without a sense of humor when appropriate.

But this column will probably be one of my most intimate ones because at heart, I’m a very private person.

Since I’ve always loved to pray but still find myself incompetent and easily distracted at times, I have found great consolation with the following thoughts I’ll be sharing.

These words about God made me stop and think – bringing insight that has help me move into a treasure house full of greater possibilities.

The other day, a friend handed me a sheet of paper that conveyed the following words. How did she know I needed help?

It read:

“My child, you need not know much in order to please me; only love me dearly.

You must know I read the very bottom of your heart. Ask a great deal – be frank! I would rather be complained to than ignored.”

“Confide to me your failures; I will show you the cause. I am the master of all hearts, my child and I lead them gently where I please. I will place about you those who are necessary to you, never fear.”

“Tell me your annoyance with every detail. Who has pained you? Who has wounded your self-love? Who has treated you contemptuously? Tell me all and then say you forgive and forget and I will give you my blessing.

Why not confide to me your pleasures in your own words. Tell me what has happened since yesterday to console you, to make you happy to give you joy.

Has an unexpected visit done you good, a fear been suddenly dispelled, have you met with unlooked-for success, have you received some mark of affection – a letter, a present?

Has some trial left you stronger than you expected? All these things, my child, I obtained for you.

What do you not say, “ I thank you.” Gratitude draws benefits and the benefactor loves to be reminded of his bounty.

Have you no thoughts or anxiety to do a little good for the souls of your friends, for those who you love and who, perhaps, forget me?

Tell me what motivates you? If only you knew how I long to do good for you.

Write a long list of all your wishes – all the needs of your souls and come read it to me.

Tell me how proud, how touchy, how selfish, how cowardly, how idle you are, do not blush!

I will help you to improve, poor child. Many saints had these faults, as you, they prayed to me and little by little, they were cured.

Be patient and tomorrow bring me a heart even more honest, devoted and loving because tomorrow I shall have new favors for you. Go now and resume your daily chores.”

By Dixon Bledsoe We’ve all been there. The holiday funk. You wake up and lethargy sets in. The tree needs to get up before New Year’s, and some might even argue before Christmas Day. The Man About Town: Are those your legs… or are you riding a chicken?

By Jim Kinghorn Now that the spectacular fields of tulips out at Wooden Shoe have faded it’s time for a visit to the Oregon Garden, Silver Falls or to take the short drive to Schreiner’s for irises and Adelman’s for peonies. Even if you’re not a plant person, a visit to these places will give you an appreciation for the […]

Something for the Soul: Discernment – Search for wisdom

By Winnie Bolton I hear the word discernment on the theological formation level at Mount Angel Seminary often. Some of my volunteer time is spent at the seminary so my exposure to that continual awareness is insightful growth for me. Discernment gives rise to wisdom, the ability to look deeply into something and perceive distinction keenly with clarity. Discernment in […]
