Man About Town: He’s the big wiener! – You want mustard with that?

By Jim Kinghorn

Eng Acupuncture recently welcomed acupuncturist and herbalist Andrea Fisk to their First Street practice. Andrea comes to Silverton via Chicago and has extensive experience developing treatment strategies for her clients. The Man was going to try acupuncture once but I didn’t get the point…

Silverton’s state lawmaker Vic Gilliam landed a role in the TNT network drama called Leverage. The show is about con artists and thieves……(Nope, I’m not going to say it, that would be just tooo easy)…..and features Gilliam as the owner of a baseball team. The Man thinks seeing someone you know on TV is pretty cool but bets that Gus Frederick will probably not be looking for an autograph anytime soon.

Ya know, cheesecake is one of life’s little pleasures. For convenience you just can’t beat corndogs, the ubiquitous food on a stick, and chocolate, it’s everybody’s favorite comfort food. What could be better than to combine the best of all three and you have chocolate-covered cheesecake on a stick, available for a limited time at Aylene Geringer’s The Chocolate Box.

Speaking of sugary delights, Dr. Michael Kim’s dental practice collected more than 35 pounds in his Halloween Candy Buyback program. The collected confections will be sent to our troops overseas where they have free dental care.

Denny Stoll reports that tickets are now available for the inaugural Jingle Bell Ball. The Dec. 5 semi-formal holiday dance will be in the J Frank Schmidt Pavilion and will raise funds for the Oregon Garden Foundation.

The Silverton Holiday Shop Hop is back after a one-year hiatus. Get your passport stamped between Dec. 1-15 at participating businesses and be eligible for one of 25 prizes. Make a purchase and double your chances to win. Look for your passport in this edition of Our Town and get hoppin’.

Do you feel lucky, punk? If so, (my apologies to Clint Eastwood) enter to win a limited edition Oregon’s 150th Birthday Pendleton blanket from the Silverton Historical Society. Tickets are now available at the Chamber of Commerce and the Silverton Country Museum. It’ll only cost you a measly $3 bucks so The Man says “Go ahead, make their day.”

Michelle Fenney, proprietress of the Silverton Green Store in the Wolf Building has also acquired the Stomp ‘n’ Grounds coffee shop. The Man hopes they don’t start serving green coffee – that would just be wrong.

Mt. Angel Sausage King Jim Hoke was the big winner of the 2008 Honda Civic offered by the Benedictine Sisters. Money from the drawing, over a half a million dollars since its inception in 1995, goes toward health care for retired sisters and to outreach for new members. Big Jim says that the Honda was the first thing he has ever won in his life and he hopes he can get the Monastery Mustard stains out of the seats (actually, I made up the last part). Rumors that he will paint the car bright yellow and mount a huge sausage on top could not be verified by press time.

Have a happy Thanksgiving!

Voice of an angel: Remembering my friend Beth Davisson

By Dixon Bledsoe This one hurts. Losing someone you adore is just plain painful. Beth Davisson had that affect on people. I liked her the first time we met in 1964 when she joined our 7th grade class at Mark Twain. She was new, but she was sweet, kind, smart and just as goofy as the rest of us 12 […]

Take a moment…Remember the Fallen

Memorial Day is upon us, and as most of you know by now, I love veterans. In this day and age where most people think about barbecues, beer, and three-days off, many of us give time to say thanks to those who have made the ultimate sacrifice in serving our country, fighting for freedom, and protecting the American Dream. And […]
