A Marion County Grand Jury concluded July 1 that the June 15 shooting of a suspect by a Mount Angel police officer was justified given the circumstances. The person shot, Lloyd Schafer, was treated for gunshot wounds and released from the hospital after two days.
Mount Angel’s Police Department has gone from having six officers and a police chief to four officers and a chief. Two officers were placed on paid administrative leave on June 16 after a non-fatal shooting incident June 15 in Mount Angel.
The sudden resignation of Mount Angel Police Chief Brent Earhart has left many community members asking why. Earhart, 54, submitted a letter of resignation to City Administrator Susan Muir at 5 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 21.
Mt. Angel Police Chief Brent Earhart is grateful for the “investment” the Mt. Angel City Council and Mt. Angel School Board has made in the community by reinstating the position of the school resource officer. The position had been eliminated by the city council when it adopted its 2009-10 budget.
